Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin"Weekly, not Weakly" The life-cycle of a preacher reboots every seven days. Birth and death, beginning and ending, creation and culmination...all happen every week. Clyde Fant, a teacher of preachers at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, used to tell his Minister of Music friends: "Preparing and preaching the weekly sermon is like a church musician having to write the lyrics of a song within seven days, plus draft the musical score, plus rehearse it, revise it (all within a week), then sing it before a group of listener/critics...and then, DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN THE VERY NEXT WEEK!" He had a point. Sundays come relentlessly, as do the movements of ministry. Last week, as I attended the annual gathering of the Alliance of Baptists in Portland, Maine, I was reminded of this. The Alliance is a wonderful outfit. It is like my extended family of Baptists, attempting to be faithful in our time and place. Constantly, the group prays and ponders the discerning questions: What does God want for us now? And what does God want from us now? Zach Bay says, "Hey." He was there, along with Laura Seay, whom we sent to Maine as a missionary. I also spent time at Bowdoin College reading-up on Civil War hero, Joshua Chamberlain; plus studying the arctic explorations of Commander Perry who happened to be a Bowdoin man; and, of course, doing some chapel time. The rugged and rocky coastline had its own romance and religious power. Arthur Gordon used to say, "Salt water heals: as sweat, as tears, and as the sea." Plus, I admired the haunting art of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth. While I mused about Maine, a lot of life and death carried on back here. Surgeries, sickness, therapies, and traumas. Plus, joy. Mike Gregg tended the flock, well. From afar, I talked with Cynthia, John's Powell's daughter, as she described her grievous, but courageous choice when it was time to let John go. As Jose, her husband, put it, "God and John have already decided. Our choice is to let their choice be." I admire the brave and faithful decision of allowing natural death when it is time. From afar, I was proud of how the church tended to one another. In some instances, "Awe came upon you"...just like Acts of the Apostles reports it. From afar, I noticed the church being itself: a faith community living faithfully. Visitation, prayer, study, preparation for John's memorial service, readying for worship, and loving folk who allow it...all in a week's work for Northside Drive. That's right. You do it WEEKLY. And you do far from WEAKLY! I give thanks for the hearty spirit that abides deeply in NDBC's DNA. I figure God's grace and feisty charter members put it there. |

Touching Taliaferro with Love June 15-20, 2014 It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades. If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers who participate all five days, you are welcome for any amount of time that fits your work or family schedule. For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley. |
