Pastoral Reflection
By James Lamkin

"The Gospel of Wrong-Way Riegels"

I haven't heard anyone tell it lately...so here it is...especially for the younger crowd. It is the story of Roy (better known as) "Wrong-Way Riegels."

'Twas New Year's Day, 1929. Georgia Tech played the University of California in the Rose Bowl.

A Tech player, Jack "Stumpy" Thomason, fumbled during the first half. The ball was grabbed by a California player, Roy Riegels. In the confusion, Roy got turned around and ran the wrong way. A teammate finally tackled him after a sixty-four yard run just before he scored for the other team! Tech got a safety out of it, which eventually won the game.

Because of this high-profile mess-up, Roy got a new name: Wrong-Way Riegels.

     But that's not all.

During half-time, the California locker room was as quiet as a tomb. Players sat around sulking. The only sound was made by Riegels who sat in a corner, blanket around his shoulders, sobbing.

All wondered what "locker room speech" Coach Nibbs Price was about to give. However, the coach said only one thing: "Men, the same team that played the first half, will start the second." This meant that he expected Roy to go out and play again.

"I can't do it coach," said Roy, "I ruined everything."

Putting his hand on Riegels' shoulder, Coach Price said, "Roy, get up and go back; the game is only half over."

I heard Dr. Bill Hull tell this story years ago; and I remember what he said happened next.

Roy, indeed, went back. Not only did he return to the field, he did so with passion and power. The crowd was blown away. It was some of the greatest college football ever played; and one of the greatest college football stories ever told.

In spite of this, California lost. The mighty Yellow Jackets

won 8-7.

However, in an odd way, Regiels won too. Later, he said, "I wanted a hole to open in the ground so I could jump in it.... You run the wrong way with a football in front of 60,000 people, and it's pretty hard to lie out of it."

Somehow, Roy grew from this. He found a strength within himself that was bigger than his mistake. For the rest of his life he would send letters to athletes who made high-profile errors, encouraging them that they can move on.

On September 25, 1971, GA Tech's entire 1928 team was inducted into the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame. Roy Riegels was there as a special guest. The Georgia Tech Letterman's Club presented Riegels with a membership card (see Alumni Magazine, Fall 1971).

Riegels smiled and said, "Believe me, I feel I've earned this."

We make a big deal of Lent as a season of repentance, a time to stop some things and start others.

But why stop at Lent? Perhaps the message of Easter is even better suited for a new beginning.

Wrong-Way Simon Peter sure found it to be so. This fumbler/bumbler, was seen in the High Priest's courtyard at halftime crying his eyes out. He had denied his best friend three times.

But Easter changed everything. Peter found his voice, his courage, and his destiny.

Turns out, God doesn't leave us "wrong-way types" in the locker room of despair. Thanks be to God.
