Pastoral Reflection By James Lamkin "The Blessing of the Shawls..." Soon after my mother died, a prayer shawl arrived. It came at a good time. Mother died on a Wednesday morning in October 2012. I "took sick" the day before; and the sickness lingered longer than Momma. It was a good three months later, maybe four, before my respiratory issues stopped. One chaplain/colleague told me, "The lungs are the body's organ which holds grief. Like anything pulmonary," she said, "grief is messy." Perhaps that is because it is primal. I had watched the body, which had given birth to my body, be buried in the ground. And that took my breath away. During the weeks which followed, weeks of sneezing and sniffling, Susan Harlan walked into my study with a prayer shawl. It was gift from the newly formed Prayer Shawl Ministry. It had been "knitted together in love," as the Apostle Paul might say, by a group of committed women. Susan and I sat. We both held the shawl. Then she offered a prayer: May God's grace be upon this shawl: warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing. May this mantle be a safe haven: a sacred place of security and well-being; sustaining and embracing in good times, as well as difficult ones. May you be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love. Amen. My prayer shawl now rests on the shoulders of the small rocking chair in the corner of my study. In that chair I was held as a child, even before I was born. And yes, the shawl finds its way to my shoulders, like it did when thirty refugees and I spent a cold winter's night at the church house. I find its "holding" comforting. On this coming Sunday, March 2, 2014, we will dedicate the next batch of Prayer Shawls. Already, thirty-six have been given away. Another dozen are now ready. They will be draped on the kneeler, the prie-dieu, used for grooms and brides and ordinands. The women, whose hands knitted them, will lay hands on them again and bless them and send them on their way to new recipients. Alice Ledbetter was a recipient. She loved her prayer shawl. It held off the chill and held onto the love. Wore it every day in the hospital. Wore it the day she died. That is not a bad way to die. I want to do the same, wrapped in yarn that knows of graceful memories and faithful expectations. I could do no better than to go out... cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love. Amen. |

Souper Bowl 2014 The "Souper Bowl party and Hunger Fund Gathering" was once again a big hit! Thanks to Mona Steins, many worker bees, the cooks who brought a variety of soup, chili, and desserts, plus about 120 folk who gathered in the Fellowship Hall...a good time was had by all! Donations totaled $2,009! These funds are used locally and globally to fill food pantries, purchase baby formula, and provide healthy snacks for children in summer and after-school programs. Thank you NDBC for your wonderful support! |

The winter storm that blew through Georgia week before last still has folks in east Georgia needing help. First Baptist Church Augusta has been busy since then going out clearing debris, patching roofs and helping folks in neighborhoods. As they are out, they find more and more needs. If you and/or a group from your church can help, PLEASE CONTACT Rev. Andy Jones, Minister of Missions at FBC Augusta. He is coordinating the need requests and the work assignments. He will work with you on the details, when you can come, etc. The best way to reach him is on his cell phone: 706-306-3015 or his email: ajones@fbcaugusta.org. The sooner the better, as they say! Missions Corner Touching Taliaferro with Love: June 15-20 It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades. If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers for the entire week, you are welcome for any number of days that fit your work or family schedule.
For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley. |
Celebrations
The NDBC staff celebrates the anniversary of our colleague, James Lamkin. James has been the Senior Pastor at Northside Drive Baptist Church, since 1997. We are glad that James is a part of our team. Gratefully, Mike Gregg, Rachel Sherron, Alyssa Aldape, Paul Fletcher, Jeff Harbin, Rose Hidlay, Renee Gamache, Vanessa Johnson, and Richard Willingham. |
A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
