Pastoral Reflection
By James Lamkin

"Overhearing Gratitude"

There is one last story to tell in the Sanctuary snowstorm adventure. That would be the part about thanksgiving.

The fateful night happened three weeks ago yesterday. It was the evening God sent us thirty traffic-snarled-snowbird-refugees to spend the night on sanctuary pew cushions.

By the next afternoon, our make-shift flock flapped about and took flight. After a few false launches, all left for home.

However, even as Renee and I began to close-up-shop, the phones rang, texts came, and in-box emails showed-up. Days later, snail mail followed. The content of each was basically the same: Gratitude.

     Please eavesdrop...

Voicemail, January 29, 2014:

"James, this is Terry Bershere, one of your overnight residents from the snow storm. I made it home safely and I wanted to thank you people for your wonderful hospitality. It wasn't the most deluxe, but hey you did a beautiful job with what you had on hand. I sure do appreciate it; I wouldn't have made it thru the night without you guys. Thank you very much."

Voicemail, January 29, 2014:

"Rev. James...Thank you for your hospitality last night. I did appreciate it greatly. I wanted to let you know that I made it home safely. I took I75 South to 20 West and the roads were pretty much clear. Thank you, God bless, bye." ~ Bryan

Email, January 30, 2014:

I was one of the "storm effected" and stranded people. You guys did way more than you needed to accommodate for all the people that came to the church. I wanted to know if your church accepts good gestures from people in the community. I wanted to give back a little for what you guys did. I was thinking about dropping by today and bring some canned/frozen food, just as a re-imbursement of what was served to the people who did get accommodated.

Best regards, and Thanks a bunch!!!

~ Ahsan Jaffery, Norfolk Southern Co., Atlanta, GA

Email, January 30, 2014

     Dear Northside Dr. Baptist Church,

I just want to say thank you to Rev. Lamkin and staff for the great hospitality and concern they showed to me and others during snow/ice storm this week. Words can't express my gratitude. When I walked to your doorstep at 4 AM, I was so relieved when Rev. Lamkin said "come on in!"... If ever you should need some assistance while being at the airport, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks again and God bless.

~ Walter M. Vinson | Manager | Government & Community Engagement | Hartsfield-Jackson Airport

Postal mail, February 6, 2014

I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you for opening your doors to us. If it wasn't for your help and the help of others in this time of need, many of us would have been stranded in our vehicles. Please accept his donation ($50) to help someone in their time of need.

     God Bless,

~ Bryan Kilgore,Dallas, GA

Thank you Northside Baptist for rescuing my sister from the cold and keeping her safe and warm over night. You and your congregation are a true blessing!

~ Adam Meeks

Amen. Amen.

A Book on the Boundary

A Study of Deuteronomy

Led by Rev. Mike Gregg

January 15-February 26, @ 6:30 PM

In Room 202

We will take seven more weeks to complete our study of the book of Deuteronomy before the beginning of Ash Wednesday and Lent. You have not missed much, so come and join the discussion. If you are new, Mike will provide you with information and materials from the previously studied chapters.

A Summary: The Israelites are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivers a pep talk to guide the people as they look ahead to their new lives as followers of the One God. Deuteronomy is a book on the boundaries. The reader is taken to the boundary of the land, the edge of the future of the Hebrew people, and the threshold of a new understanding of God. This study will explore the limits of the text while increasing our knowledge of God's law.

Missions Corner TTWL

Touching Taliaferro with Love: June 15-20

It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades.

If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers for the entire week, you are welcome for any number of days that fit your work or family schedule.

For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley.

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
snow-shovel.jpg   As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
    1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
    2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
    3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
    4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
