NORTHSIDE NOTES - January 15, 2014
Pastoral Reflection
By James Lamkin

To Make it Look Easy...

The story goes that Ginger Rogers once asked Fred Astaire, "Why do you work so hard and rehearse so much?"

Legend has it that Fred said back, "To make it look easy."

He would practice for hours in front of a mirror watching the movement and placement of his hands and feet.

When performing, he looked like a man totally at ease with his body. His steps were fluid and graceful and had the illusion of improvisation, just made-up on the spot.

The real truth was that all was practiced down to the last detail.

What was he up to with all this practice? "To make it look easy," he said.

At NDBC, I have the best seat in the house. I get to see folk do many of the invisible ministries behind the scenes. Though the list is far from exhaustive, I was taking note of several at the Church Council meeting Monday night. To the uninformed, they, "make it look easy."

Jack Guynn reported that the 2014 Budget Pledge Campaign was done and it was a success. I am grateful for the focused leadership Jack provided during a terribly challenging time for both Joey and Jack. Under his leadership, we pledged sacrificially and hit the mark within the comfort zone. He brought the recommendation that we precede. The Church Council blessed that word. And at the end of this month, the Church-in-conference will vote on the recommendation. To me as a non-Finance Committee member, they, "made it look easy." But, I know better.

Barbara Atchley updated us on missions: the missions committee's work with a Women's Shelter and the upcoming Souper Bowl Sunday raising money for world hunger. Mike Gregg chimed in that the eatin' event was a great one that draws a lot of NDBCers who enjoy being together. Again, they, "made it look easy." But I know better.

Ruth reported on the Deacons. They are doing a great job inviting connectedness and staying connected. Whatever spirituality is, it is about relationship. They, "made it look easy." But, I know better.

As the year rocks-on, many good things will happen among us. These may look easy; but the rest of the story is that the staff and members and guests and God all work together for good.

     Let's keep working.

     Let's dance.

Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study

Wednesdays in 2014

@ 10:30 AM, in the Conference Room

We meet weekly from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the church's Conference Room. We study the texts selected in the Revised Common Lectionary for the next Sunday. Large print editions are available each week and for the upcoming Sunday. Discussion is deep and wide and lively. All are invited.

Seven More Weeks!

A Book on the Boundary:

A Study of Deuteronomy

Led by Rev. Mike Gregg

January 15-February 26, @ 6:30 PM

In Room 202

We will take seven more weeks to complete our study of the book of Deuteronomy before the beginning of Ash Wednesday and Lent. You have not missed much, so come and join the discussion. If you are new, Mike will provide you with information and materials from the previously studied chapters.

A Summary: The Israelites are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivers a pep talk to guide the people as they look ahead to their new lives as followers of the One God. Deuteronomy is a book on the boundaries. The reader is taken to the boundary of the land, the edge of the future of the Hebrew people, and the threshold of a new understanding of God. This study will explore the limits of the text while increasing our knowledge of God's law.

Chapters 1-4

The Spies and Remembering the Wilderness Journey

Chapters 4-6

The Ten Commandments

Chapters 7-11

Taking the Land, the Golden Calf, and the New Tablets

Chapters 12-26

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
snow-shovel.jpg   As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
    1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
    2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
    3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
    4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
