Pastoral Reflections By James Lamkin Giving...and Living...toward Christmas I gave blood yesterday. It is one of my Christmas preparation rituals. (I also watch It's A Wonderful Life, read The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever, and count my many blessings as I name them one by one.) But back to the blood.... In 1976, I was in seminary. With the CB (Citizens Band) radio craze in full bloom, we rode the roads with our antennas flapping. My CB "handle" was the Cowtown Chaplain...a combo reference to Ft. Worth, TX, as well as my vocation. One winter's day, the call went out over the CB airwaves that blood was needed at a large, in-town hospital. O+ was the type called for. I figured there must be a huge catastrophe afoot, because O+ is the most popular blood type, and is generally a universal donor. I have O+ blood. So I decided to go give. Honestly, the tipping-point of my decision was not the specific need, but rather, the specific day. It was Christmas Eve. I turned my car around. Showed-up at the hospital. Rolled-up my sleeve and readied myself for the supersized needle they use to draw blood. It looked as big as a McDonald's straw. About that time, I discovered there had not been a train wreck or a plague outbreak. Instead, the need was one cancer patient who was critically, desperately low on platelets. Little did I know that it took three or four hours to give platelets! But, it was Christmas Eve. And all my shopping was done. And I would still get home before dark. So sure. Stick me. That memory has stuck (pun intended) with me as every Christmas nears. It's a small gift...a unit of blood...but sacramental in that it has saving value for me...and perhaps some saving value for others. In giving, I got; and I've watched NDBC folk do the same: dancing to the spiritual symbiosis of giving and getting, year after year. The Finance Committee would hold me accountable if I did not plug the wrap-up for the giving/getting journey of the 2014 Pledging process. Giving is up this year! Let's continue to make it so. Some of us grew-up singing about Micah's line from the Old Testament: "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse." Storehouse giving invites the individuals of a faithful community to bring together their resources for a discerning, prayerful, central distribution. Come to think of it, my Pledge Card is one other holiday ritual for me. On the way to Christmas, I will look for the Love of God wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. But also, I will make sure I've filled out my pledge card, wrapped it in an envelope, and laid it on the NDBC Business Manager's desk. There's room in the In-Box. With appreciation to the Finance Committee under Jack Guynn's leadership, and with great gratitude to God, the Cowtown Chaplain gives thanks. I invite you to do your part and do the same. |

Advent Combined Adult Church School
December 8, 15, 22 & 29 @ 9:30 AM
Located in the Art & Soul Room (#202)
Although a book of prophecy, Isaiah is also one of the most poetic books of the Bible and is read by people throughout the world during the season of Advent. With imagery such as the lion and lamb lying down together, the holy mountain of God, and streams in the desert, the words of Isaiah are woven together with great expectations of the life to come.
Dr. Karen Massey, Dr. Steve Sheeley, and Rev. Mike Gregg will follow the liturgical calendar and utilize the curriculum Great Expectations: Studies in Isaiah to explore four word pictures in Isaiah: Peace for God's People (Isaiah 2:1-5); Hope for God's People (Isaiah 11:1-10); Joy for God's People (Isaiah 35:1-10); and Promise for God's People (Isaiah 7:10-16).

Gaudete Sunday: A Service of Expectant Joy
Sunday, December 15, 2013, at 11 AM
Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent in the liturgical calendar of the Western Church, symbolized by the rose candle on the Advent wreath. The day takes it name from the Latin word Gaudete ("Rejoice"), the first word of the intro of this day's Mass: Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. On December 15, at 11 AM, the Northside Drive Baptist Church music ministry will present a program of Advent Lessons and Carols, featuring the Sanctuary Choir, the Northside Drive Ringers, and the Children's Choirs. This Gaudete Sunday service will consist of familiar readings from scripture, interspersed with beautiful music of the Advent season.

Come and join us as the Youth and others lead in a service of simple Christmas joy. We will light beeswax candles, share sweet buns and coffee, hear stories of Christmas tradition, and sing our favorite carols. And in all of that, we will anticipate the cheer of Christmas Eve. A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
