NORTHSIDE NOTES - November 20, 2013
Pastoral Reflections

By James Lamkin

Thanksgiving, Delta Airlines,
and a Bushel of Sweet Potatoes

Waiting in the Baggage Claim area of an airport is a tedious art. You've heard it said that, "A watched pot never boils," but I say unto you, "A watched luggage conveyer belt never delivers."

So we wait.

Liz and I waited last week. We checked a few things at the Monroe, LA, airport hoping they would show-up at Hartsfield-Jackson.

Upon arriving in Atlanta, we stood around waiting and watching for the baggage warning light to flash and bell to ring; and they finally did.
Some backpacks popped-out, followed by golf clubs. A duct-taped ice chest was next.
A long pause ensued...which always amuses me. What is the luggage doing down there? Maybe they're just too polite: "You go first." "No, you go first." Our bags are in less of a hurry than we are.

Eventually, suitcases emerged, including ours.

But what we were waiting for was the bushel of sweet potatoes.

I had gone back to Wisner, LA, to preach in the worship service celebrating First Baptist Church's 90th anniversary. I was honored to be invited; and I was so glad I went. I needed it more than I knew. I brought with me a long awaited and necessary, "Thank You," that had steeped in me for 34 years.

FBC people are generous folk. I shared with them and they with me. Drenched in funny, joyful, painful, and tearful memories, we basked in the grace and power of hope.

They also shared their sweet potatoes.

The fertile and flat Mississippi delta is a natural farmland. Folk once grew cotton, then soybeans. Now, seems like, a lot of corn and sweet potatoes.

Ray and Dorothy Young are agra-business persons. They have loved me from one marriage to another and in-between. I officiated at all four of their kids' weddings.

When my mother died last year, Ray and Dorothy came to the funeral. Like Wise Men from the East, they came bringing gifts: sweet potatoes. And mercy, were they good!

The same was true last week. Dorothy and Ray didn't want us to leave without plenty of sweet potatoes to help us through a cruel Atlanta winter. So they sent a bushel with us.

Delta Airlines said it was OK. They were glad to help for an extra $25 (also provided by Dorothy and Ray). And right on schedule, the bushel arrived intact.

A bushel is eight gallons, four pecks (if you know what a peck is). But for the gratitude Liz and I carry around, a bushel container isn't large enough. It runneth over.

Grateful am I for those in Wisner who have loved me from the past; and thankful am I for you in Atlanta who are part of the loving community of NDBC in the present.

I've got a bushel basket to hold my gratitude this Thanksgiving Day; but (note to self) I'm going to need a bigger basket.

Poinsettia Orders poinsettias.jpg

November 24-December 8

Our Annual Poinsettia Altar will be in place beginning Sunday, December 16, and remain through Tuesday, Christmas Day. While altar flowers are always given to the Glory of God, it's our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas also in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. We will begin accepting Poinsettia orders on Sunday, November 24. Each poinsettia plant is only $20, and order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use (simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate). Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office. The deadline for orders is Sunday, December 8.

Missions Corner

Christmas Giving at NDBC

The remains of Halloween candy still linger on the coffee table. Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim still sit in the cabinet waiting to make their appearance for Thanksgiving. However, it is time to prepare our Christmas mission projects. As in the past few years, we will have the opportunity to provide gifts to both children and adults through several organizations---Buckhead Christian Ministries (Joyous Toys); Morningstar Children and Family Services (Giving Tree-new toys and clothing for children in residential care), and The Extension (toiletries and new clothing for men and women in a transitional program). More details about the giving opportunities are available in the Narthex and in the mid-week notes.

Hanging of the Green

& the First Sunday of Advent

Sunday, December 1, 2013

In the NDBC Narthex & Sanctuary, at 9:30 AM

The Worship and Music Ministry Team invite you to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, December 1. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. The service will take place at 9:30 AM in lieu of Church School, and will be preceded by a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex. During the service we will reflect on some of the Christian components of the season, and special music will be shared as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space.

Northside Artist and Craft Market

December 7, from 9 AM-4 PM

In the NDBC Fellowship Hall

The Northside Artist and Craft Market celebrates the talent of local artists this holiday season. We will have dozens of vendors who produce their own artwork and crafts. The vendors are small businesses with products ranging from photography, paintings, handmade garments, high-end crafts, and woodworking items.

At this time, the Holiday Market limits exhibits to hand-crafted items only. Completed items must be hand-crafted by the vendor. Applications to sell goods at the Holiday Market must be received by November 1st. Information packets will be sent two weeks before the Market. For more information, go to  www.northsidedrive.org or contact Shannon Moore at artists@northsidedrive.org. Market vendor application.
