Pastoral Reflections By James Lamkin
Maturity within Community...
What's God Got to Do With It?
In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus says, "Upon this rock I will build my church."
But I wonder if Jesus had second thoughts about that. Seems to me that the church (Church, Inc.) has about as many problems as any other institution...built by Jesus or not.
It's like the story my best friend, Chris Graham, used to tell. One Sunday morning while Chris was preaching, he bellowed, "The church is not exempt from problems. In fact, every evil, every vice, every sin that is out there in the world, is in here in the church!"
Following this, a pregnant pause hung silently in the air.
Suddenly, from the back of the sanctuary came a loud, "UH OHHHHH!" With an uncanny sense of timing, a two-year-old had dragged and dropped something from her mother's purse, and with it an exclamation, followed by laughter from the congregation. Uh oh, indeed.
Also, an "Amen."
Perhaps the church is no different in the problems it has from those of the world; however, perhaps the church is different (or should be different) in how it handles those problems.
The awareness of the presence of God amid our troubled relationships and our overwhelming problems is supposed to make a difference.
"How might God be present as we go through these problems," the church asks? "How busy do we need to be solving problems; and how trusting should we be as trust our problems to God," the church wonders?
This coming Sunday's (November 17, 2013) epistle lesson says, "Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living
in idleness
...." I don't know any Atlantan who is idle. If they were, they would get run over. However, the cryptic scripture reminds us that we rub-off on each other. How we go about our lives, whether idle or overactive, informs and infects others. In what way does church leadership, both lay and clergy, serve as the immune system when it comes to anti-community behaviors?
Whatever the answer, we listen to the trump card played by the epistle writer: be aware of the presence and the meaning of, "...our Lord Jesus Christ...."
Ah. Good answer.
After we fall into the ditch, we get back up. We find our way back to the path. And we follow Jesus.
I'll be exploring these notions in this coming Sunday's sermon. Pray for me.

Artist in the Narthex
Sunday, November 17, 2013
Gloria Smathers
Gloria grew up in South Carolina and has lived in the Atlanta area for most of her adult life. Her uncle, deaf and mute, was a gifted oil painter and his encouragement and influence inspired an early interest in painting. After finishing school and starting a family she decided to pursue this early interest and her true love, painting. She was soon drawn to watercolor and the immediacy and transparency that it affords. She found a mentor and friend in another gifted watercolorist and fellow church member, Mary Williams.
With Mary's encouragement, Gloria began to study and work with several locally known watercolorists including Helen Schneeburger, Dolores Kennedy, Karen Bradshaw, and Marie Matthews. She also worked with several nationally recognized artists including Charles Reid, Christopher Schink, and Judi Betts. She found Charles Reid's style embodied the watercolor features she most admired and his work has been the most influential on her painting. She has worked with Charles numerous times at various locations in Europe and the United States and continues to study with him whenever possible. In addition, Gloria has studied drawing at the Atlanta College of Art and botanical art at the Taos Art Institute.

Missions Corner
Christmas Giving at NDBC
The remains of Halloween candy still linger on the coffee table. Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim still sit in the cabinet waiting to make their appearance for Thanksgiving. However, it is time to prepare our Christmas mission projects. As in the past few years, we will have the opportunity to provide gifts to both children and adults through several organizations---Buckhead Christian Ministries (Joyous Toys); Morningstar Children and Family Services (Giving Tree-new toys and clothing for children in residential care), and The Extension (toiletries and new clothing for men and women in a transitional program). More details about the giving opportunities are available in the Narthex and in the mid-week notes.
