Pastoral Reflections james and silas 10-2012

By James Lamkin

All Saints (and Sinners) Sunday

The day after Halloween is the day we call: All Saints. As is our custom, we celebrate it on the first Sunday after November 1. So get ready. This coming Sunday is it.

We will call aloud the names of those in the congregation who died since this time last year: Alice Ledbetter, Don Hall, Julian Turner, Kenneth Davis, Ray Griner, and Don DaLee. Each name will be preceded by a silent pause, and followed by a tolling bell.

Holy Communion will be celebrated and we will join "our voices with all the company of heaven...." And woven throughout the service, a harp will play, its strings vibrating between this world and the next.

In addition, we not only will name the reality of death, but we also will celebrate the gift of birth. Micah Nelson will be dedicated, along with his parents, David and Marie, and his church, Northside Drive Baptist.

Thus, from entrance to exit, we know that our journeys are gifts from God; and we mark these threshold moments with rituals.

I will offer the All Saints Sunday Communion Meditation. I think I will title it: Myron Madden, Will Campbell, Aunt Dorcas, and Ms. Margret: Priest, Prophet, Giver, and Friend. These four persons who were connected to my life, died this year. Each gave me a distinct gift from the heart of their unique identities.

Even as I name their names and the gifts they shared, you will be thinking of their counterparts in your own life. Who conveyed God's grace to you? Who challenged you to see God's love as larger than your inbred tunnel-vision? Who lived a life of quiet, but obvious, generosity; so much so, that you just can't help but do the same? And who has prayed for you and your family from cradle to casket?

I will be preaching; but so will you. You will be remembering the stories of these influential saints and the changes they wrought upon your life.

And your self-preached sermon will work a small miracle. The writer of Ephesians described the miracle this way, "...with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which God has called you---the riches of God's glorious inheritance among the saints."

A Study of Deuteronomy

Led by Rev. Mike Gregg

September 11-November 20

@ 6:15 PM in Room 202

The Israelites are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivers a pep talk to guide the people as they look ahead to their new lives as followers of the One God. Deuteronomy is a book on the boundaries. The reader is taken to the boundary of the land, the edge of the future of the Hebrew people, and the threshold of a new understanding of God. This study will explore the limits of the text while increasing our knowledge of God's law.

2013 Annual Preschool Auction

Preschool logo

During the week of November 11, The Preschool at Northside Drive Baptist Church will hold its 5th annual silent auction. Last year this event raised over $12,000 and was attended by parents, family and friends, Church members and Church faculty. Not only is the annual auction our main source of non-tuition funding for extracurricular activities, supplies and improvements to the school, but this year we have the task of replacing $28,000 worth of toys, supplies and pageant costumes that were recently ruined by extensive water damage.

Please help us by collecting merchandise and services for our event. Feel free to contact our Auction Chair, Lauren Carroll, at lauren@bluedoorinteriors.com or 678-662-0002. We appreciate your support!
