NORTHSIDE NOTES - October 23, 2013
Pastoral Reflections james and silas 10-2012

By James Lamkin

Y'all Need a Prayer Shawl

I sit silently in my study with a prayer shawl around my shoulders. With quiet hands I hold a card that came with it, given to me by Susan Harlan one year ago. It says:

May God's grace be upon this shawl...

Warming, comforting,

enfolding and embracing.

May this mantle be a safe haven...

a sacred place of security and well-being.

Sustaining and embracing in good times

as well as difficult ones.

May you be cradled in hope, kept in joy,

graced with peace and wrapped in love.

The Northside Drive Prayer Shawl Ministry.

I wear this shawl today; because today is the first anniversary of my mother's death.

I remember the day of the week, more than the day of the month. She died at 8:24 a.m. on October 24, 2012. But last year, October 24 was a Wednesday.

We had spent all day Saturday, trying to make Home Health work; but we failed.

Sunday we finally transferred to Hospice, though mother never would approve.

Monday we wrestled with the responsibility of medications, struggling with the irrational feelings of shame and betrayal.

On Tuesday, the Hospice staff, "did an intervention" on us. We needed it. To my sister and me, the social worker and the chaplain said:

1--"You two need to function as a team, and you are not doing that right now."

2--"Your mother is on a journey; and you are on a journey. And they are not the same journey."

3--"Your journey is to make the most loving decisions you can, with the best information, at the time you have to make them."

4--"You don't have as much power as you think you do. Your choices regarding a little more medication, or a little less, may change a day or two, but no more."

5--"Sounds like you have not said all that you need to say to your mother. Go to her bedside, together, and get that done."

Thing is, I've said those same words to others, many times; but as you know, it is different when you are inside the bottle of grief, looking out.

My sister and I did all of the above; and thank God we did.

Wednesday dawned early; and for the first time in days, mom had rested all night. So had my sister and I; and now the night was over.

With a final breath, Mother died.

With those memories in my heart, my church's Prayer Shawl now embraces me. Knitted into its threads are prayers and tears and friendship and rowdy laughter (look-in on the Northside Knitters some Wednesday night and you'll see). This gift is a montage of meaning. It hugs me and reminds me that I am a beneficiary of the church's love over this past year of hurt and hope.

Need a Prayer Shawl? Ask for one. Or take one to someone. Susan Harlan and I did just that last year when we went to see Mary Dutton. Mary's dementia means she no longer remembers much about the people or the prayers of NDBC.

But, that's all right: her Prayer Shawl does.

Trunk-or-Treat

Sunday, October 27, 5-6:30 PM

Get ready for costumes, candy, and carnival games at Trunk-or-Treat! This year we'll need your help with spooky bounce houses, bean bag toss, disk drop, and much more! We're collecting extra candy now until Sunday, October 20. Please be aware we have children with peanut allergies. Try to provide candy that is nut-free and is not processed in a plant with nut-based products. Invite your kids, your neighbor's kids, and of course all grandchildren.

Set-up will start at 3:30 PM. We'll serve hotdogs and chips for $2. Childcare will be provided for children of volunteers. Bring your festive car trunks filled with candy and put on your smiling faces! Let's work together to make Trunk-or-Treat a fun, community-wide event for all ages! See Rachel for volunteer sign-ups and questions at rachel.northsidedrive.org.

DeuteronomyA Book on the Boundary:
A Study of Deuteronomy

Led by Rev. Mike Gregg

September 11-November 20

@ 6:15 PM in Room 202

The Israelites are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivers a pep talk to guide the people as they look ahead to their new lives as followers of the One God. Deuteronomy is a book on the boundaries. The reader is taken to the boundary of the land, the edge of the future of the Hebrew people, and the threshold of a new understanding of God. This study will explore the limits of the text while increasing our knowledge of God's law.

This weeks Bible Study, October 23, has been cancelled. Study will resume next Wednesday, October 30.

2013 Annual Preschool Auction

Preschool logo

During the week of November 11, The Preschool at Northside Drive Baptist Church will hold its 5th annual silent auction. Last year this event raised over $12,000 and was attended by parents, family and friends, Church members and Church faculty. Not only is the annual auction our main source of non-tuition funding for extracurricular activities, supplies and improvements to the school, but this year we have the task of replacing $28,000 worth of toys, supplies and pageant costumes that were recently ruined by extensive water damage.

Please help us by collecting merchandise and services for our event. Feel free to contact our Auction Chair, Lauren Carroll, at lauren@bluedoorinteriors.com or 678-662-0002. We appreciate your support!
