Pastoral Reflections By James Lamkin
Rick Steves, Les Miz, and Everything Ken Burns Ever Thought Of...
Evidently, I am an easy touch for Public Television's pledge drives. If you need a large tote back, a compact umbrella, or an out-of-print Wayne Dyer book, call me. I've got an extra somewhere.
I often cry during pledge drives...and not just because of their length. I cry because of the stories.
To feel the peace, at last, in Val Jean's sweet voice as he welcomes his death bed in Les Miserables; or to see familiar sights along the Camino de Santiago while Rick Steves walks with pilgrims, compelled to put feet-to-path for reasons that have not yet found words; or to sigh at the sounds of a solidary violin singing the Ashokan Farewell over the years and over the bloody bodies of a Ken Burns battlefield...these stories haunt me and hold me and remind me of how totally human I am.
I pledge because I love PBS's storytelling. Plus, I occasionally get a really keen map of Europe.
If you think about this liminal time of year, and then you think about the emotional limits of a multi-column spreadsheet, then you will know where this pastoral article is headed. 'Tis the season to ponder the connection between community and commitment, between faith and finance.
Liz and I were taught tithing. It was a family value. Tithing is giving 10% of the family's income to (or technically, through) a church or synagogue. It is a biblical notion. It is one of the ways we deal with the addiction of money. It is an antidote for the reductionism of our culture turning us into simply consumers.
Plus, there's the simple joy of just giving your stuff away...for God's sake!
NDBC is a place and a people, "...where resources are shared generously." I have found it to be true for 16 years. Many members know its truth longer than that; and we pass along that mantle to the next generation. We live large. We don't just tell, we show. We sharpen our pencils and pledge our faith.
The Good Book says God is a giving God. I like to think that God gave you that blink of the eye you just had while reading, and the breath you just "took" while whispering.
Since I spend a lot of my life taking...taking food from the soil, water from the earth, oil from the ground, energy from the sun, strength from prayer, and much love from many in our church...I figure it is time, again, to give back.
Maybe we should give away coffee mugs on All Saints Day, with faces imprinted with Northside Drive's big-hearted givers from years past, like George Smith and John McIntyre.
Maybe, we'll just fill-out a pledge card.
Maybe we'll just give our brief lives completely to God.

A Book on the Boundary: A Study of Deuteronomy
Led by Rev. Mike Gregg
September 11-November 20
@ 6:15 PM in Room 202
The Israelites are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivers a pep talk to guide the people as they look ahead to their new lives as followers of the One God. Deuteronomy is a book on the boundaries. The reader is taken to the boundary of the land, the edge of the future of the Hebrew people, and the threshold of a new understanding of God. This study will explore the limits of the text while increasing our knowledge of God's law.
This weeks Bible Study, October 23, has been cancelled. Study will resume next Wednesday, October 30.

2013 Annual Preschool Auction

During the week of November 11, The Preschool at Northside Drive Baptist Church will hold its 5th annual silent auction. Last year this event raised over $12,000 and was attended by parents, family and friends, Church members and Church faculty. Not only is the annual auction our main source of non-tuition funding for extracurricular activities, supplies and improvements to the school, but this year we have the task of replacing $28,000 worth of toys, supplies and pageant costumes that were recently ruined by extensive water damage.
Please help us by collecting merchandise and services for our event. Feel free to contact our Auction Chair, Lauren Carroll, at lauren@bluedoorinteriors.com or 678-662-0002. We appreciate your support!
