Pastoral Reflections By James Lamkin One Baptist's History and Heritage "The Past is never dead. It's not even past." In my own aging, this truth of Faulkner's is getting truer. I bear in my body and beliefs, its weight and its wonder. On this Baptist History and Heritage weekend, we will spend time harvesting our past which "is never dead." And that's a good thing. Our history holds resources to call upon, and sins to repent of and not to repeat. About a century after Martin Luther pounded his ninety-five talking points into the Wittenberg Church door, the left wing of the Protestant Reformation (aka: The Baptists) began surfing the tidal wave of change. God used our ilk of Christians to do something new. This past weekend, my sister and I did something new. We attended the Lamkin family reunion at New Prospect Church in Ansley, La., and did so for the first time without either mother or father. Not long after Lewis and Clark headed west across the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase in search of the Wooly Mammoth and the Northwest Passage, a few Lamkin's followed suite and got as far as Jackson Parish, hauling their faith in tow. Historians believe that "Old" Prospect Church existed in Georgia before the exodus; thus, when they settled beyond the Mississippi, among the pines and pin oaks, they called the church building, "New." And so it was. My sister and I sat on the same slat-back pews our ancestors did over 100 years ago. From its founding, it was a Union church, meaning that folk of different denominations met there. Baptists on the first and third Sundays, Methodists on the second and fourth, and on the fifth Sundays, there were "Singings." This year, the descendants of Aunt Aura, one of the ten original tribes, hosted us. A picture board held a montage of who we were and how we got to be this way. The photo mosaic was a time machine from mule-hitched wagons to dusty cars on dirt roads. There was Uncle Sherwood, lean and lanky in the yellowed snapshot wearing his sailor's suit. He was 20 years old and on his way to war with his arm around cousin Willard. Behind him stood Papaw and Aunt Connie and even little Lynda. Sherwood and Willard were in another photograph...neither as lean, nor as tall, as before. The years had brought a stoop to their shoulders and grey to their hair. And within a year or two, by 1989, Uncle Sherwood would be gone. Before me was my past, kinfolk with bright eyes and broad smiles and big hopes, now laid-to-rest in the church's burial ground. "...Home is the sailor, home from the sea, and the hunter home from the hill." An annual walking tour and a remembered requiem, reminds that though the red clay dirt holds the dead, "The Past is never dead...." Nor is it "even past." I believe that to be true, especially every I draw-up someone from the waters of baptism and proclaim, "Raised to walk in newness of life."

Last year this event raised over $12,000 and was attended by parents, family and friends, Church members and Church faculty. Not only is the annual auction our main source of non-tuition funding for extracurricular activities, supplies and improvements to the school, but this year we have the task of replacing $28,000 of toys, supplies and pageant costumes that were recently ruined by extensive water damage.
Please help us by collecting merchandise and services for our event. Feel free to contact our Auction Chair, Lauren Carroll, at lauren@bluedoorinteriors.com or 678-662-0002. We appreciate your support!
