Pastoral e-pistle By James Lamkin What's in a Name? Sixteen years ago, when websites were new to the church world, we got one. But right off the bat, there was a question: "What would be our domain name?" As in, what do we put in front of .org to find us on the internet? But, we had to settle for NDBC.com (commercial) instead of NDBC.org (organization). Why? Because NDBC.org was taken! Turns out it already was the domain name of the National Duckpin Bowling Congress...NDBC. Go figure. Of course, now we go by Northsidedrive.org, but ever since those early days, I've made a hobby of collecting NDBC's. I consider them our acronym (or initialism) cousins. There's NDBC, the National Dog Breeders Council; also, NDBC the National Diploma in Business Computing. Plus, NDBC the National Data Broadcasting Committee, the North Dakota Ballet Company and the North Down Borough Council (in Ireland). Then there's the National Dry Bean Council. Go to their website for all your dry bean needs including recipes for Tuscan White Bean Hummus, Chick Pea Egg Salad, and Tomato Butter Bean Bok Choy. And, don't forget about the National Data Buoy Center, headquartered in Mississippi. One of my favorites is the National Dizzy and Balance Center. Their website says: Our commitment to excellence and the development of...relationships is what will make NDBC the standard that everyone else is compared to for the treatment of balance disorders. I like that one. Our own NDBC does about the same thing...spiritually speaking. God and we treat balance disorders. What I love about all of these NDBC websites is that they have more in common than in difference. They attempt to state their identities, word their visions, and describe their mission-driven efforts which defines them to the world. Also, they all struggle. Read the fine print in their newsletters. For example take the messy politics that plagues the NDBC Duckpin Bowlers. There was a painful letter from Stan, the former kingpin of the bowlers, where he drew a line-in-the-sand when it came to the divisive question of, "Who is qualified to participate in league competition?" Obviously, some teams were playing without proper NDBC membership. They weren't bona fide! Stan pointed out that Section 700 of the rulebook clearly stated the proper procedure. Applications were due by November 1 and if not received promptly, the only choice of the council would be disqualification. But I shall not stand in judgment. Even though the seedy world of Duckpin Bowling is riddled with challenges, what NDBC isn't? I bet even the Dry Bean Council has trouble with its counselors. Though we NDBCers of Northside Drive Baptist Church certainly have our troubles, we also have our gratitude. God has been good. Last Sunday, I said something like, "Don't watch for Jesus to return." What I meant was, "He's already here; and he shows up here every day." As I look out on Sundays at a sea of faces...OK, make that a pond of faces...I see a body that God has chosen to inhabit. You wear God's face; and that incarnation is our truest domain name. |
The "Hymn of the Month" for August 2013
Our August Hymn-of-the-Month, Let Us, With a Gladsome Mind (#59 in The Worshiping Church), was written in 1623 when its author, John Milton, was only fifteen years old. This paraphrase of Psalm 136-with twenty-four stanzas!-was first published in Milton's Poems in English and Latin (1645). The five stanzas that we sing are based on verses 1, 2, 7, and 15 of the Psalm; which can be found in its entirety at #74 in The Worshiping Church. The tune is named after a small village in Herefordshire, England, where John B. Wilkes was employed as an organist. It first appeared in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861), which was published by the vicar at Wilkes' church, Henry W. Baker.

Energy, Intimacy, and Hymnody
Summer Worship in the Chapel
July 7-September 1, 2013
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.
Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.
Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall) so we will be singing new and familiar hymnody from our hymnal, The Worshiping Church.

Flower Ministry Team
Needed: Team members for Monday Flower Ministry
You may not know that Sunday's large altar flower arrangements are re-purposed into beautiful bouquets for our own Northside Drivers who are unable to attend services, or who are celebrating special events such as a new baby or a milestone birthday. This is an important person-to-person ministry of care for which we need your help.
Can you devote a Monday morning periodically (once a week, once a month, once in a while, once a year - your choice!) to come break down the altar arrangements into small arrangements (no talent required; vases provided) or deliver them? Men, women, families are all welcome---this is a wonderful way to show your love for each other.
The calendar of available dates is wide open and we're waiting for your call to claim a Monday for your own.
Call Nancy Davis at 404-252-9154 for more information or to sign up today.

Cub Scout Pack Liaison Needed
Northside Drive is considering hosting an existing Cub Scout Pack that is looking for a host organization. One requirement for taking the next step would be for an active NDBC member to volunteer to be the liaison between the church and the Scout organization. This is a liaison position-not asking for someone to be the troop leader-and would serve as a responsible go-between. Previous Scouting experience preferred, but not required. For additional information, please contact Dave Wooten, Church Moderator, at dgw0421@bellsouth.net .

A Pastoral Prayer for Northside Drive
Vacationers & Travelers
O God of voyages and voyagers,
Thrill us with not yet discovered possibility.
Protect us with the 23rd Psalm's certainty.
Strengthen us when the destination still is distant.
Empty us of stress's poison.
Open us...vacate us...through Sabbath's vacation.
Rest us beside still waters and restore our souls.
Teach us through the strangely familiar.
Comfort us through the familiarly strange.
Befriend us through a stranger's kindness.
Connect us with the Holy Spirit's presence.
Keep us as we say daily The Lord's Prayer.
Heal us when tender feet weary.
Bless us when it is time to return...
For only by leaving, can we ever come home.
Amen
~ James E. Lamkin
