A Pastoral e-Pistle
By James Lamkin
Brilliant
I walked a good piece of the Camino de Santiago with a delightful Irish couple. We laughed. We sang. We told stories. And every time something wonderful, insightful, or spot-on was said, their one-word response was, brilliant!
That exactly is the word I would use with Mike Gregg's summer Sunday School line-up. Brilliant! With master craftsmanship, Mike Gregg has cobbled together a summer mosaic of insight and hope regarding the changing faith/world/church of which we are a part. Brilliant! If I could make it mandatory for all Northside Drivers to attend the summer classes, I would. All church leaders need to know about the world we are preparing to serve Christ in. The Trustees and the Church Council members need to attend. The members of the Finance and Personnel Committees need to be present, also all of the deacons.
In fact, anybody who is planning on being a Christian and being alive for at least 3 more months, needs to attend. Yesterday, 58 people were in the Sunday School classroom listening to our own, Larry McSwain, as he spoke about the changing landscape of church. Brilliant!
If I could draw cartoons, I'd draw one on the posture of the North American church as the future rolls toward us. Imagine this picture: Three good ole' boys lean on a slat-back fence. On their shirts are the words: The American Church.
On a nearby livery stable hangs a calendar with the year 1917.
In back of the three fellows are several new fangled horseless carriages. Their drivers fly by eager, excited, and passionate.
With the roar of car engines behind them, one fellow says, "I hear a big change is coming to the transportation world."
"I've heard the same," says the second fellow.
"There's only one thing left to do," says the third, "We'll get the jump on our competition! Let's build an even bigger livery stable and double our order for buggy whips and bridles!"
Brilliant? Not so!
If the three guys are in the museum business, it's brilliant. But if they are in the transportation business, then no.
Now, I love horses. I used to ride Papaw's mule when he plowed his garden. We kept a horse in the barn while I was in high school. But...I didn't ride her to college when I left home in the 70's.
Once again, to Mike I say: brilliant! He's been saying these things all along; and now Larry McSwain and Steve Sheeley, and a covey of other clergy types, come along to add their amen's. Brilliant!
I, myself, am more excited about the future of faith and the good hope of Northside Drive Baptist, than ever! Of course, it will be hard work and tough pastoral work; and it won't be easy getting used to these new fangled driving machines. But I look forward to our adventure.
The next session will be on July 14 with the one and only, Dr. David Bell.
Thanks Mike; and when I tell my Irish friends about this, they will say, brilliant!

Energy, Intimacy, and Hymnody
Summer Worship in the Chapel
July 7-September 1, 2013
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.
Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.
Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall) so we will be singing more familiar hymnody from our new hymnal, The Worshiping Church. |

The "Hymn of the Month"
July 2013
We will learn #49, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, in The Worshiping Church Hymnal.
The lyrics were written by Charles Wesley in 1743. It is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 150 and follows the psalmist's structure (Praise God...Praise God for...Praise God with...) in its first two stanzas, calling all creation to praise God. In addition to the music instruments named by the psalmist, Wesley adds "the music of the heart," perhaps reflecting words of George Herbert in Let All the World in Every Corner Sing (#24)
The church with psalms must shout,
no door can keep them out;
But more than all, the heart
Must bear the longest part.
In the final stanza the call to praise is restated with echoes of the language of the Christian community; finally there is a return to the Hebrew psalmist's theme, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Thus the God to whom believers sing praise is the one Paul proclaimed in Athens, quoting the Greek poet Epimenides, the One "in whom we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). The third line of the final stanza both echoes the first line of the hymn and ties it to the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.
