NORTHSIDE NOTES - June 26, 2013
Pastoral Reflectionsjames and silas 10-2012

By James Lamkin

Touched by Taliaferro's Love

"The church exists by mission like a fire exists by burning." German theologian, Emil Brunner, said that.
I remember quoting him at a mission committee table one day; and I remember Linda Clark at that table, especially liking those words.
Brunner is right about the church. This is one reason why NDBC's efforts in Taliaferro County, GA, are important. Our existence as a church depends on it.
Oh sure, we do some good in Jesus' name. Oh sure, the children and families to whom we minister seem appreciative. Oh sure, we come bearing resources and they come bringing needs.
But, it also is the other way around. The kids and families of Taliaferro have resources and we have needs. Frankly, being with them does me a lot of good.
Birthed by Jimmy Lewis (Jeremy's dad) and the CBF of GA years ago, Touching Taliaferro with Love (TTWL) began as a partnership with the poorest, smallest, and least resourced county in Georgia. For the past eight years, NDBC has joined in; and Taliaferro has joined our hearts.
The way I see it, we are not so much Touching Taliaferro with Love, as we are Touched by Taliaferro's Love! They gift us. They let us be our playful, anxious, caring, and faithful selves. By doing so, I think every Northside Driver who goes, grows. We come back more loving, more playful, more caring, and maybe a little less anxious.
I grow not tired of bragging. The NDBC missions bunch is a Seal Team for Jesus. You could drop them out of a low-flying aircraft and before the chute fully opened, they'd have a mission Bible school up and running by the time they hit the ground. Plus, they bring enough stuff (crayons, backpacks, books, tablets, costumes, balloons, Bibles, and memory verses) to fill a C-130.
The NDBCers who went this year were: Barbara, James, Zach, Syd, Letty, Kendall, Avery, Lora, Susan R., Susan D., Susan H., Cathy W., Kathy H., Patti, J.B., Bernice, Beth, Chuck, Mona, Kay, Rhonda, and Virginia. Plus, the Meeks, Konenkamps, and Stewarts made their lake houses available for our lodging, lounging, and war room strategies. Perfect.
This team joyfully surfs on ocean waves of energy in a room with 60 kids. Yet, they know every drop of water by name. And these are not easy names! There is an occasional James and Joseph, Michelle and Alexandria; but there also is Ze'Keiyah, NyAndria, Datejah, Jakzious and Endeyah...to name a few. Then again, I had an Uncle Minnis and an Aunt Apsilla; and my grandmother's maiden name was Smelley.
NDBC's vision statement says, "We believe that hands-on missions is crucial to our own discipleship, as well as the mission of Christ in the world."
Indeed, if the church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning, then no wonder we don't just survive, we even at times thrive.
Thanks be to God for the missions community within NDBC. They are keepers of the flame.

Summer in the Chapel

Energy, Intimacy, and Hymnody

Summer Worship in the Chapel

July 7-September 1, 2013

Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.

Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.

Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall) so we will be singing more familiar hymnody from our new hymnal, The Worshiping Church.

The "Hymn of the Month"

July 2013

We will learn #49, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, in The Worshiping Church Hymnal.

The lyrics were written by Charles Wesley in 1743. It is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 150 and follows the psalmist's structure (Praise God...Praise God for...Praise God with...) in its first two stanzas, calling all creation to praise God. In addition to the music instruments named by the psalmist, Wesley adds "the music of the heart," perhaps reflecting words of George Herbert in Let All the World in Every Corner Sing (#24)

The church with psalms must shout,

no door can keep them out;

But more than all, the heart

Must bear the longest part.

In the final stanza the call to praise is restated with echoes of the language of the Christian community; finally there is a return to the Hebrew psalmist's theme, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Thus the God to whom believers sing praise is the one Paul proclaimed in Athens, quoting the Greek poet Epimenides, the One "in whom we live and move and have or being" (Acts 17:28). The third line of the final stanza both echoes the first line of the hymn and ties it to the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.
