Summer Worship in the Chapel

July 7-September 1, 2013

Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.

Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.

Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall) so we will be singing more familiar hymnody from our new hymnal, The Worshiping Church.

       We will learn #49, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, in The Worshiping Church Hymnal.

        The lyrics were written by Charles Wesley in 1743. It is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 150 and follows the psalmist's structure (Praise God...Praise God for...Praise God with...) in its first two stanzas, calling all creation to praise God. In addition to the music instruments named by the psalmist, Wesley adds "the music of the heart," perhaps reflecting words of George Herbert in Let All the World in Every Corner Sing (#24)

no door can keep them out;

But more than all, the heart

Must bear the longest part.

       In the final stanza the call to praise is restated with echoes of the language of the Christian community; finally there is a return to the Hebrew psalmist's theme, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Thus the God to whom believers sing praise is the one Paul proclaimed in Athens, quoting the Greek poet Epimenides, the One "in whom we live and move and have or being" (Acts 17:28). The third line of the final stanza both echoes the first line of the hymn and ties it to the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.

       As a cost savings to the church, the gas is turned off in the Spring and turned back on in the Fall. This is part of the summer savings program with Infinite Energy. We will have an electric water heater for use during those months.

       Let's explore together with Northside Drive Baptist Church Preschool's Camp HopScotch! Five (5) fun-filled FULL week sessions, each with its own theme. All sessions include worship, music and movement and art. Camp HopScotch is staffed by NDBC Preschool teachers whose goal is to provide your child with a safe, exciting camp experience.
