Coffee with the Clergy and No Church School

Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin It's about Time...Ordinary Time Time is sacred. Whether a few years, or many, the "time we have" is a gift from God. Our ancient ancestors paused at harvest time and offered their first fruits to God. They waited in the dark of night as the winter solstice swallowed the moon; and three days later, birthed the light again and gave it back to the Earth. They buried their dead when the rhythm of a person's breath no longer marked the ongoing tempo of time. Time is sacred. Christians have just finished the sacred season of the 50 Great Days of Easter. We celebrated through festivals of worship. We named that, "Light shined in the darkness; and the darkness could not put it out." Resurrection happened and continues to do so. However, the Easter season has passed. Pentecost Sunday has come and gone. We are now in Ordinary Time; and, yes, that is a liturgical term. It is the season after Pentecost and will run all the way to the first Sunday of Advent in December. It starts with Trinity Sunday and ends with Reign of Christ Sunday. During Ordinary Time we detox from our addiction to the spectacular; but withdrawal is tough. Wealth affords many a bell and whistle. With it, we fill our time with activities, commutes, distractions, sounds, and stuff. Obsessions are tough to treat. But now's the time. Summer in the northern hemisphere will soon be upon us. It is time to tend to ordinary things, such as loving one another, self-care so that you might give care, prayer, kindness, and joy. Since clergy are often first responders when crises boil-over (and crises always boil-over) I encourage my colleagues to lean into the relaxed routine Ordinary Time calls for. Whenever I write letters to clergy friends, I often end by saying, "My prayer for you, and for all ministers, is that the remaining months in Ordinary Time...be just that." Soon, our summer flock will scatter. Soon, the lake house and mountain house and beach house (and tree house?) will bring an in absentia to the Lord's House. But God is not limited to a locale. There is nowhere that God is not. So here is my non-extraordinary prayer... May Ordinary Time gift and grace you and yours. May Ordinary Time offer fallowness necessary for nutrition, growth, and refreshment. May Ordinary Time lead some of us to the mission- fun of Taliaferro County. May Ordinary Time save a place as we worship joyfully in the chapel. And may Ordinary Time remind us of the extraordinary love of God for this time and all times. Indeed, time is sacred. |

Touching Taliaferro with Love
Book Bags for TTWL
Remember the excitement of starting the school year with a new book bag? The children who are part of Touching Taliaferro with Love start their school year in early July and Northside Drive will help them begin with the supplies needed for a successful year. A couple of years ago, through the generosity of a Northside Drive family, each child at Taliaferro was given a new book bag. The gift brought squeals of delight from all the children.
Let's delight another group of 1st-6th graders with new book bags this summer. Collection bins will be available in the Narthex through June 9. Questions? Contact Susan Harlan or Barbara Atchley. |
