Pastoral Reflections
By James Lamkin
Easter Uh-Oh's
I was leading the congregation in a guided prayer, naming all the things we needed to bring to God. Praise was on the list, also thanksgiving and intercession. Of course, confession was part of the prayer, too.
That was when the "Uh-Oh" came...during confession.
All this happened last weekend at the Alliance of Baptists' annual gathering at First Baptist Church of Greenville, SC. The theme for the convocation was Little Altars Everywhere, taken from the title of the book by Rebecca Wells who also authored The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
Since the Alliance of Baptists is big on seeing all of life as sacred, the title was a natural fit. Here's a quote from the book: I see all the ordinary stuff---our brick house, the porch, the tool shed, the oil drum barbecue pit, the clothesline, the chinaberry tree. But they are all lit up from inside so their everyday selves have holy sparks in them, and if only people could see those sparks, they'd go and kneel in front of them and pray and just feel good. Somehow the whole world looks like little altars everywhere.
Altars require art; and art requires artists. In each worship service an artist was at work on the church's chancel during worship as an act of praise. Our own Susan Harlan was one of these. She wove a prayer shawl on her loom right before our eyes. Like the Bible verse says, "We are knit (woven) together in love."
I had the honor of introducing Susan and to offer a theme interpretation. I recalled how three Alliance of Baptists churches have shaped my adult life by weaving me into their life and love: Northminster Church in Monroe, LA; Ravensworth Baptist Church in northern Virginia; and our congregation, Northside Drive Baptist.
"I am me because of you," I said, "you have taught me how to love."
But back to the Uh-Oh....
During the guided prayer, I gave silent space for heart-words to rise. Yet, the silence was not silent. A restless kid, possibly a three year old, was making noises somewhere in the congregation. It was fine with me. If we all knew the power we dabble with in prayer...we should all be restless!
I named how the Easter stone that rolled-away from Jesus' tomb has kept on rolling, breaking down walls humans have built to separate us from one another and from God. "However," said I, "that same Easter stone has ROLLED OVER and STEPPED ON OUR TOES; and we confess our complaint!"
That's when the kid said it. "UH-OH!" It rose like a mushroom cloud out of the silence.
Slowly, a giggle spread down the pew. Then, a chuckle possessed that whole section. Then, holy laughter rolled through the congregation like a wave.
Some truths are simply put.
"UH-OH indeed!" I prayed in response. "And OH-NO. And eventually, AH-HA. Amen."
Prayer doesn't get more holy than that.
In retrospect, maybe it was not a kid who said, "Uh-Oh." Maybe it was the Holy Spirit. Maybe an Easter angel. |
2013 Alliance of Baptist Annual Convocation
A Report on the Annual Convocation of the Alliance of Baptists at First Baptist Church of Greenville, SC, April 5-7, 2013, by James Lamkin:
- The theme, Little Altars Everywhere, reminded us that the Holy One is among and in us all; thus we treat all creatures and all creation as aspects of God's sacred world.
- First Baptist Church is a sister Alliance church. They generously shared their ample facilities with grace and love.
- 363 registered attendees (plus a bunch unregistered) which is a really good number for the low-overhead, but strong-hearted Alliance!
- Northside Drivers attending were: Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, Barbara Atchley, Zach Bay, Lewis Bozard, James and Liz Lamkin, and Eric Cain (former member now on Furman Staff).
- Wonderful "break-out" sessions on issues that touch our churches and spirituality, such as Israel/Palestinian concerns, theological approaches to human sexuality, is the church a club or community?, race relations, plus clergy support and accountability.
- Susan Harlan led worship on Saturday afternoon! In each worship service, an artist was on the chancel creating art. On Friday, a painter painted. On Sunday a potter shaped clay on a wheel. On Saturday, Susan brought her loom and her weaving skills...and during the songs and sermon and scripture, she pulled and pushed and wove part of a prayer shawl.
- Northside Drivers connected with our mission partners in Cuba, with Bonnie Dixon who runs Journey Partners regarding Zimbabwe, Brazilian Baptists, and Alliance friends over the years.

Artist in the Narthex
Louise Davis
April 14, 2013
The lovely Louise Davis will bring samples of her own painted china to the Narthex on April 14. A charter member of our church, she sang in the choir for 17 years and has been a faithful presence in our congregation for all these years. Louise tended 4 young children, managed the home for her busy surgeon husband, and she cared for her own mother who died at an early age in 1961. Friends at NDBC acknowledged the pain and blank spot in her heart and suggested that she learn to paint on china. In classes with Eleanor Crane she found her niche---she took many classes and seminars. Then she taught many classes and seminars and in 1989 became president of the World Organization of China Painters. As president of WOCP in 1991, she organized an exhibit of 144 artists who displayed their work for over 4000 attendees. Louise is still active in WOCP and will be driving to Columbus in early May to oversee the booths for the Georgia exhibit. Louise still holds seminars in her home studio and workshop---artists paint china, the kilns are fired, and beautiful painted pieces emerge.
We are honored to have Louise show us her work. It is beautiful, it is delicate. The painting speaks from the heart of one who has lived for more than 90 years. Thank you Louise.

A Note of Thanks
Thank you for your out pouring of love and prayers during Kenneth's illness. Just to say thank you seems hardly adequate. Kenneth would have been amazed as I am. Your beautiful cards, notes, flowers and food have brought comfort to me. Also, I wish to thank our wonderful deacon, Gail Hermance, for her food, words of comfort and attentiveness.
