Easter for the Discombobulated

I look forward to the day when my thinking clears-up. When the fog lifts. When life gets back to normal. When I can finally get my, uh, stuff together. But that may take awhile.

Admittedly, I never have been a straight A student when it comes to a disciplined, organized life. However, it has been a year since anything has felt routine...a year of feeling discombobulated.

Discombobulated is a word with about as murky an etymology as the emotional state it describes. It was invented in the 1830's and means, "no longer having one's composure." Also, the bob in discombobulated may reference a bobbin, a reel of thread or ribbon on a sewing machine. Things go smoothly (combobulated) until the thing jumps the track. Then you have a mess. Ask any fisherman about a backlash on a casting reel just when the fish start biting!

I've imagined that the Season of Easter (50 Great Days) will be the time when I finally get recombobulated (and yes, that is a real word). When life will settle down. When family members will stop dying, at least for a while. And when routine will return with graceful familiarity.

I'm not holding my breath; nor am I wishing that the past year be anything other than it was. It was 100% human; 100% holy. I took a long walk. I watched the sky turn so blue it hurt my eyes. I felt the rain in Spain fall mainly on the plain (and in my backpack!). I prayed that my heart would open wide. I gave thanks for my mother's life and Aunt Dorcas's life and Chris Graham's life; and I began the bumpy ride of good grief.

I have a theory about the respiratory affliction that haunted me for three months, plus the lingering cloud that has turned my brain into a bucket of molasses. Left to my own anxiety, I could rush right past the healing/holy power of burial rituals. In wanting to "get on with life," I might not get what I need from death.

Thank God that Easter meets us on the other side of the grave, after-the-fact, beyond the night. Perhaps if I make the journey with Jesus, Peachtree Road will turn into Emmaus Road and against all odds, things may begin to make sense again.

Discombobulated or not, I'm living into Easter's joy. Join me?

Triple E!

April 9, 2013, at 11 AM in the Fellowship Hall

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY--DON'T MISS IT!

Please join us for Triple E on Tuesday, April 9, at 11 AM, to hear Julia Forbes, who is the Shannon Landing Amos Head of Museum Interpretation and Digital Engagement for the High Museum, as she brings us a presentation on "Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting," a major exhibition of work by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera on view February 14-May 12, 2013. Atlanta's High Museum is the sole U.S. venue for this widely acclaimed show. Come and bring your book clubs, friends, and neighbors. If you would like to stay for lunch at noon, call the church office for a reservation. See you there!

THE EXHIBITION:

Few artists have captured the public's imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886-1957). The myths that surrounded them in their lifetimes arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their active participation in the historical happenings of their time. Their work speaks of a fierce loyalty to and pride in Mexico, the ideals of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, and their commitment to the conditions of the common man. The exhibition pairs together works by Kahlo and Rivera chronologically and according to themes, including maternity, Mexican identity and portraiture. While the exhibition positions the artists' work in the political and artistic contexts of their time, "Frida & Diego" also examines the ways their work continues to influence Mexican artists.

THE SPEAKER:

We are delighted to welcome Julia Forbes as our speaker. She has held education positions at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, Washington National Cathedral, the Walters Art Museum, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. She served as the Eastern Region Director in the Education Division of the National Art Education Association, and was honored as the Eastern Museum Educator of the Year for 1998. She has degrees in Art History and Cultural Anthropology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master's Degree from the George Washington University in Art History/Museum Training.
