E Dai' and Easter

My friend, Rev. Sharlande Sledge, passed along an article written by Mark Nepo. It tells of a Portuguese phrase with only three syllables: E dai' (ay-die-ee). It means and then?

Literally, e means and; and dai' means, from a place near you. It implies the question, "What is just beyond where you are?" Or, "What is your next step?"

E dai' is used as one friend sits listening to another. Upon hearing a hardship story, or after considering the description of a difficult situation, the listening friend might take a deep breath and then ask, e dai'? It compassionately inquires, "Now what?"

The teller of the tale doesn't always know; and none of us ever know completely the meaning of our circumstances, or the full burden or blessing of an event at the time. But standing still is a luxury that life rarely affords.

So we pause. We ponder. We pray. And we ask e dai'...and then we choose.

We will soon be called upon to do that very thing with Easter. What do we do with Easter?

The first disciples wondered the same. According to the gospels, the resurrected Christ appeared several times to them. In response, the disciples evangelized the world? No. Set-up soapboxes on Jerusalem's street corners so that all may hear? No. Pick-up bricks and boards and build church houses? Oh no, no.

What they did, was go fishing. That's right. With the exciting, world changing, death shattering news of the resurrection of Jesus in their memories, hearts, and experiences...they went fishing. Read John 21.

Personally, I think they chose wisely.

When I don't know what to do, my default decision is to do the safest...which always is the familiar. Good or bad, that is my e dai'.

I vote we not be too hard on these fishermen/disciples. It's a tough thing to locate where you are on a map that hasn't been drawn yet. Going backward is underrated. They went back to fishing.

If a sink hole lies ahead and the ground can't hold your weight and there is a bigger picture afoot than the next place you put your foot, pause and ask, e dai'? Listen for your inner GPS. Consider where that intersects your largest frame of reference. And prayerfully ask the faithful question, "Where is God in my story; and where am I in God's story?"

Easter requires courage and compassion. Easter asks us to be receptive, but also take initiative.

Bleary-eyed we rise from the unfair whys of life. We stand bruised and broken and flat-footed with the e dai' question hanging in our throats like a fishbone. What to do now?

Yet, against all odds, we know. We will remember who we are. We are Easter People; and knowing that, we will find the strength and the stamina with God's help to take the next step.

Go fish; and go in faith.

Lenten Devotional
Dr. Steve Sheeley will be writing devotionals through the Lenten season. If you would like to be on his email list and receive his musings, you may email him at ssheeley4@comcast.netMay the longings of this Lenten season lead us to the resurrected Christ.

Today's devotional...

There are times in the letters of Paul when his words seem to leap from the pages of Scripture and take on a life of their own. This is one of those times. His argument in Romans has been sometimes difficult to follow, almost torturous in its ancient legalese. I wish I could report that it's easier to follow in the ancient Greek. But he has come to a logical high point as Chapter 8 begins, and the first verse of the chapter rings out with a vibrant truth.....(click here to read more)

Artist in the Narthex

Kendall Konenkamp

March 17, 2013

Kendall Konenkamp, who has grown up at NDBC and is now a senior at Holy Innocents, will bring herself and her artwork to our Narthex on March 17. As a very young girl, Kendall was never far removed from her blue canvas bag, which held all the tools for making arts, and she told everyone that she would be an artist when she grew up. And so it is-now accepted at 4 major universities and waiting for the answer at 6 more-Kendall will be off to art school in the fall. She has already studied in summer classes at SCAD and has attended a week-long program on web design and motion media in the SCAD Hong Kong program.

The juxtaposition of realism and fantasy or abstraction figures heavily in Kendall's own work, and she is attracted to and inspired by other artists who bring these dynamics to their artwork. Our homegrown and aspiring artist not only has an eye for art, but a huge heart for the loving and caring of people in the real world. We look forward to following her life in both arenas.

Holy Week: What is it all about?

Palm Sunday: March 24

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday. On this day we remember Jesus' "Triumphal Entry" into Jerusalem riding on the back of a donkey. The Gospel writers vary on the timing of the event and even its meaning and scope. Some say cloaks were tossed on the road, others say "leafy limbs," and John's Gospel speaks of "palm branches". The 11:00 AM worship service will begin with a Processional Hymn as the children, youth, choir and ministers enter waving palm branches. It is a festive day, though a penultimate one. The joy of celebrating the Christ who reigns, will soon be followed by the juxtaposed image of the Christ who has come to die. The shadow of the cross reaches all the way back to Palm Sunday.

Passover Seder Service: March 27

Every spring, our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate the Passover feast. It is an eight-day celebration, begun with the Seder, the Passover Meal. Passover is one of the high holidays---the most holy of days---in the Jewish year. It marks the single most important event in Jewish history, the Exodus from Egypt. And Passover is a joyous celebration. In that event, God delivered a people from oppressive slavery, and called them to be the people that would make this God known to the rest of the world. Celebrate the Passover Seder Service at Northside Drive on Wednesday night, March 27, at 6:45 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Remember, this is a symbolic ceremony, not the actual meal. Please make reservations through Renee Gamache at renee@northsidedrive.org or 404-237-8621.

Maundy Thursday: March 28

The 6:45 PM service of Maundy Thursday in the sanctuary remembers Jesus' last supper with his disciples. To them he gave the commandment to "love one another." Thus, Maundy Thursday is from the Latin, Dies Mandati, or Day of the Mandate. In this quiet evening service we observe a solemn communion service at the rail and own the darkness within ourselves and our need for grace.

It is a Northside Drive tradition to end the Maundy Thursday service with The Office of Tenebrae (Shadows). There are eight scripture readings. The candles in the Passion Cross and on the Chancel will be snuffed. The service will end in darkness.

Good Friday, Noon Until Three: March 29

This is the most somber of all services. One Gospel writer comments that as Jesus died on the cross, "there was darkness from noon until three." Thus, the sanctuary will be open during this time for any who want to spend the afternoon in worship and reflection. The Noon Until Three service contains seven rhythms focused on the seven last words of Christ (a composite from the four Gospels). Each rhythm lasts about twenty minutes and includes a tolling bell, a scripture reading, instrumental music, a brief homily, a prayer, and silence. It is "come and go" or feel free to "come and stay".

Easter Sunday: March 31

What a day of rejoicing it will be! On this day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The choir offers joyous and celebrative music; and before we go, as always, there will be a congregational singing of The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. An Easter Egg Hunt for all children will follow the Worship Service on the church grounds.

Children and Youth Waving Palms

Sunday, March 24, 11 AM Worship Service

Attention all children and youth! Sunday, March 24, is Palm Sunday! We want you to help us praise Jesus in worship by waving palm branches in the air! Please meet Mr. Mike in the Narthex before the 11AM Worship Service on March 24, to get your palm branches and instructions about waving them in the service. Bring a friend to Palm Sunday!

Donate Easter Eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt

The children of the church and in the community eagerly anticipate the Easter Egg Hunt every year. Please donate 1-2 dozen stuffed plastic eggs for the event (no peanut products please). You may drop off the eggs at the church office during the week or in the Children's Sunday School room every Sunday until Easter.

Nursery Help for Easter Sunday

Easter, March 31, is one of the best opportunities to welcome guests and their children. In order to keep our nursery safe with an increased number of children during Easter Sunday Worship, the Children's Ministry Team needs you to volunteer to be in a preschool room or the nursery. Please contact Mike Gregg at mike@northsidedrive.org for availability and more information.

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
