Pastoral e-pistle
by Rev. James E. Lamkin
On Fat Tuesday, we feasted. On Ash Wednesday, we fasted. The rhythm of fast/feast is our spiritual pulse.
Northside Driver, Ken Brant, passed along a poem which was passed along to him by his sister. I love it; and on this second week of Lent, I wanted to pass it along to you.
Fast and Feast
Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; feast on patience.
Fast from worry; feast on faith.
Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-centeredness; feast on compassion for others.
Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm.
Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on recognizing unity.
Fast from unsettling anxiety; feast on inner peace.
Fast from half-heartedness; feast on commitment.

Today's devotional...

Psalm 5; 147:1-11
Deuteronomy 9:13-21
Hebrews 3:12-19
John 2:23 - 3:15
We Baptists have historically put much of our trust in the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. Only we have always assumed that we were saints, and we're actually much more comfortable with the phrase "once saved; always saved." That probably explains why we were always taught that our official "testimony" needed to note the date (hour and minute, if possible) of our salvation experience, the date and place where we walked the aisle, and the date and place of our baptism. Such details provide confirmation of our membership in the church, a membership equaling membership in the group known as "saints"...those who were, are, and always will be "saved."
No matter what we might do in between that salvation experience and our deathbed affirmation.
I hope you can "hear" my sarcasm, because I'm pretty sure at this point in my spiritual journey that I'm no longer willing to trust my eternal salvation to any doctrine, much less this one. And I'll have to argue that many of the New Testament books written in the latter half of the First Century tend to support my assertion that salvation is a process and a journey, rather than just an event. In fact, a close reading of today's passages from Hebrews and John suggests that the issue is not getting folks to join the faithful; the issue is getting folks to remain among the faithful....(click here to read more) |
Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
We meet weekly 10:30-11:30 AM in the church's Conference Room. We study the texts selected in the Revised Common Lectionary for the next Sunday. Large print editions are available each week and for the upcoming week. Discussion is deep and lively. All are invited. |
Easter Lilies
Our personal and community histories have been enriched by our family and friends, both past and present. At Easter, the Flower Ministry Team provides you an opportunity to make a tangible expression for gratitude with Easter lilies on Easter Sunday. Your $20 donation in memory or celebration of loved ones makes this memorial possible. Please sign up on the Easter envelopes provided in the Narthex, or send your money to Rose in the church office with your dedication information included. Please respond by March 17. For more information see a Flower Ministry Team member.

Missions Corner Touching Taliaferro with Love June 16-21, 2013 It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades. If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers for the entire week, you are welcome for any number of days that fit your work or family schedule. For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley. |
Volunteer Needed!
We are in need for a volunteer(s) to check the Pew racks once a month or so. Prayer requests cards, offering envelopes and other supplies need to be replenished. Perhaps you and a friend could meet for the task and have lunch afterwards. This is a much needed ministry and would be appreciated by all members. Please let Renee or I know if you are willing to help.

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email. |

UPDATE: Come join us on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 PM, in Room #207, the Parlor, to knit or crochet a prayer shawl. If you are not sure how, no problem, there will be plenty of people to help you get started. This group is open to anyone who would like to join! For more information call Susan Harlan at 770-377-3869. |
