Do Not Lose Heart

After Mother's death and Chris's death and Aunt Dorcas's death, I complained to Liz about feeling downhearted... that I had grown "weary in well-doing." She said she understood; and she was not surprised.

I desire to live a wholehearted life. The writings of Brene Brown and others have wooed me to do so. To live wholehearted means being open to love, prayerful to God, gracious to others, and compassionate with yourself; but it also means exposure to heartbreak and vulnerable to heartache. Paradoxically, wholeheartedness can set one up to lose heart.

Liz listened, then responded, "Let me read you a quote from my Weavings Journal: We become what we love; and who we love shapes what we become."

Wow. That sentence stopped me in my downward spiral. We become what we love; and who we love shapes what we become.

The mystics spoke loving Jesus by "gazing on the crucified Christ." They encouraged habitual attentiveness, a discipline which could shape a disciple into the pattern of Christ's love.

Liz read on, "Rather than losing heart, we may be transformed into Christ's image and become vessels of God's compassionate love for others. This love is the root of true joy: joy at discovering in ourselves something more than our wounded desire for fairness and respect...."

Liz didn't offer this as an antidote for discouragement, she knows me better than that. Rather, these words formed the common, but difficult ground of hope. We talked for a while about our wounded desire for fairness.

Losing heart is a slippery slope, and for some, a vocational hazard. The psalmists warned about it, the prophets cautioned, and Jesus told parables. It is all over the Bible. Even the Apostle Paul advised, "Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart." But I bet he was bragging. I bet came close many a time.

For some of us, if felt like Lent started early this year. Death happened. Overwhelming responsibilities washed over us. The TV's breaking news broke us. We got stuck. Wilderness sand wedged between our toes long before we got to Ash Wednesday's starting line.

I know Lent is about confession. I know it is about repentance. But there's something else I need from Lent this year. I pray that Lent will be restorative.

Maybe all those who have lost heart, will be found; maybe the long journey toward wholeheartedness will be worth it; and maybe the best news of Lent is its surprise ending. Ready or not, Easter will happen. Easter will meet us where we are. Easter will whisper to the most downcast, "Do not lose heart."

New CareNotes for You!
Have you noticed the CareNotes display rack near the front doors in the Narthex? If not, stop by and look. CareNotes are pamphlets designed to provide information and words of care to people who are hurting, confused, or in need of guidance. These publications give special emphasis to grief, illness, and family issues. The Deacons of NDBC have provided this resource as a way to give care and support to the church's members. The writers for CareNotes are people who have struggled with these tough subjects. Other contributors are therapists, pastoral ministers, chaplains, and health-care educators. The CareNotesin the Narthex give detailed information about family matters, intense grief, and caring for loved ones who are sick and dying. Take a moment on Sunday and browse this new collection. You might find a pamphlet that makes a difference in your life.

 -- Portraits and Perspectives

 -- Substitution, Satisfaction, and Sacrifice

Missions Corner TTWL

Touching Taliaferro with Love:  June 16-21

It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades.
If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers for the entire week, you are welcome for any number of days that fit your work or family schedule.

For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley.

Volunteer Needed!

We are in need for a volunteer(s) to check the Pew racks once a month or so. Prayer requests cards, offering envelopes and other supplies need to be replenished. Perhaps you and a friend could meet for the task and have lunch afterwards. This is a much needed ministry and would be appreciated by all members. Please let Renee or I know if you are willing to help.

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
Celebrations

We celebrate with Hartwell & Susan Dew on the birth of their new grandson, Jones Coleman Dew, born February 4, in Charleston, SC. His parents are Charles & Lindsay Dew and his proud aunt is Elizabeth Dew Cassata.

Sympathy
The sympathy of the congregation is extended to Beverly Hall on the death of her husband, Don Hall, who died on February 7, and to the family of Julian Turner, Jr., who died on February 8.
