"Every Voice In Concert Ring"

         February 13th is Ash Wednesday... believe it or not. On that day we wear our mortality and our morality on our forehead. The once lifted leaves of Palm Sunday become burned reminders that we are but "frail children of dust," as the old hymn has it.

         The holy season of Lent is upon us; and when it comes to holy seasons, music usually takes the point. Can Christmas joy adequately be said...or is it best sung? Easter's truth never has been explainable; however, Easter's hope is profoundly singable.

         So, Lent. We ask of Lenten music that it lead us across our wilderness wanderings...sometimes crawling, sometime walking, always praying.

         This year's Wednesday Lenten theme is about music. It echoes my favorite line from the ancient hymn, Of the Father's Love Begotten, with its 4th century lyrics and its 13th century Plainsong chant. It goes: "Let no tongue on earth be silent, let every voice in concert ring." Ah yes, a day is foretold when the world's cacophony will coalesce in concert and harmonize in a hymn of praise to God!

         Each Wednesday evening will feature musicians, in concert, who will minister in their own way. Every evening will start with an intention. A text from the Good Book will rise up and hold us and invite us to make the night's journey; then we will be carried in song down the road toward the Promised Land. Jeff and Gregg and Susannah (a UCC minister friend) and Kurt and our choir will "take our hand, lead us on, and help us stand."

         Over the years I've noticed that persons who attend Lenten Wednesday evening services are self-selective. Not everyone can get here from there. Not everyone can choose to carve-out the time. Not everyone's palate is suited for the variety of Lent's bland-to-red-hot taste test...from silent confession to rowdy gratitude.

         I'm excited.

         You and yours are invited.

         It is like what Aunt Dorcas used to sing every summer. With elbows flying and bracelets rattling she banged away on The Holy City while my sister and I gripped the bench, holding on for dear life. Her big voice bounced off the upright piano impaling a theological notion deep in my head and heart as she sang-out,

"The light of God was on its streets,

the gates were open wide,

and all who would might enter,

and no one was denied."

         Y'all come...all y'all. Amen.

Martha Stearns Marshall Sunday
February 10, 2013
       Baptist Women in Ministry sponsors the annual Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching and encourages Baptist churches to invite a woman into their pulpit to preach in the month of February. Our guest BWIM preacher will be Rev. Rhonda Abbott Blevins who  serves as associate pastor at the Tellico Village Community Church in Loudon, Tennessee, an ecumenical congregation in the center of a planned retirement community. Previously she served as the missions coordinator for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Kentucky and as campus minister at the University of Georgia. Rhonda is pursuing a doctor of ministry degree from the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University. She is married to Terry; they have a five-year-old son, Jake.

       Baptist Women in Ministry Celebrates the Gifts of Preaching Women Beginning in 2007, Baptist Women in Ministry invited Baptist churches to participate in Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching by having a woman preach during the month of February. This annual event has been a deeply significant source of joy and discovery for many churches as they have celebrated the giftedness of women. This annual preaching month is named for Martha Stearns Marshall, an eighteenth-century Separate Baptist woman.

       Separate Baptists emphasized evangelistic preaching, boisterous worship services, and emotional conversion experiences. They were also known for a greater openness to women's leadership, and some Separate Baptist women served as deaconesses and eldresses. Others preached and prayed in public worship. The best-known Separate Baptist woman is Martha Stearns Marshall.

       Along with her husband, Daniel, Martha converted to Christianity during the First Great Awakening. The couple eventually migrated from New England to Virginia, where they were introduced to Baptist beliefs. Concluding that scripture taught believer's baptism, they were soon baptized and joined a Baptist church, and Daniel was licensed to preach. But both Marshalls were preachers, and Martha's zeal apparently equaled that of her husband. In 1755, the Marshalls, along with Martha's brother Shubal Stearns and his small congregation in Virginia, moved to North Carolina. The group settled at Sandy Creek and established a Baptist church, which became the most influential Separate Baptist church in the South, and Martha often stood alongside Shubal to preach at church meetings. A few years later, the Marshalls moved to nearby Abbott's Creek and founded a new church, and in 1771, they moved to Columbia County, Georgia, where they established in Kiokee the first missionary Baptist church in Georgia.

       In all these churches, Martha provided excellent leadership, and in 1810, Virginia Baptist historian Robert Semple wrote: "Mr. Marshall had a rare felicity of finding in this lady a Priscilla, a helper in the gospel. In fact, it should not be concealed that his extraordinary success in the ministry is ascribable in no small degree to Mrs. Marshall's unwearied, and zealous co-operation. Without the shadow of a usurped authority over the other sex, Mrs. Marshall, being a lady of good sense, singular piety, and surprising elocution, has, in countless instances melted a whole concourse into tears by her prayers and exhortations!"

       Baptist Women in Ministry invites you to remember and honor Martha Stearns Marshall by celebrating the giftedness of the woman who proclaims the good news from your pulpit today.

       Baptist Women in Ministry seeks to be a catalyst in Baptist life, drawing together women and men in partnership with God, to illuminate, advocate, and nurture the gifts and graces of women. Artist in the Narthex

Marshall Dewell

February 10, 2013

       He began quilting over 10 years ago and considers quilting a means of sharing reflections on nature. He uses color and geometric designs to dazzle the imagination. Upon completion of his quilting creations, Marshall also enjoys scouting out natural backdrops where his quilts will be photographed, draped over a split rail fence, hanging from a colorful fall tree, or spread beside a flowing creek.

       Marshall Dewell, long-time member of Northside Drive, is an accomplished fabric artist. He notes that in high school he experimented in a science fair project with the effect of natural dyes on fabrics. He has an uncanny feel for the way that fabric pieces work themselves into a new whole cloth in a quilt or wall hanging.
       A pharmacist by training, Marshall uses his love of mathematics to mold shapes, angles and color to create large pieces of inspirational memories. The featured quilt in his collection is the Celtic Cross quilt, which he shared with us in the Lenten devotional book of 2011. This quilt was inspired by the church's inter-generational pilgrimage to Iona Scotland in 2010. We look forward to seeing his beautiful quilt designs and welcome Marshall to the Narthex.

Resolution of Apreciation for Wilton Looney

WHEREAS Wilton Looney and his beloved wife Martha have been members of Northside Drive Baptist Church for more than fifty-six years, faithfully serving our Lord and this church through a wide variety of roles;

WHEREAS he has served Northside Drive Baptist Church as trustee for the extraordinary term of fifty years;

WHEREAS his stewardship led to the very building of the sanctuary and facilities of this church where we gather today, and his insightful leadership and faithful generosity have helped to lead and sustain this church and its congregation successfully through generational cycles of congregational life;

WHEREAS his example as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and his legacy as businessman, civic leader, and philanthropist of great accomplishment and great integrity have been an inspiration to all who know him;

BE IT RESOLVED and made known to all that the Northside Drive Baptist Church Council, held the fourteenth day of January, 2013, did unanimously vote to extend its gratitude to our fellow church member and friend, mentor to many, and trustee for all, with deep appreciation for his life and service.

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
     As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
