Pastoral Reflections
By James Lamkin
"A Return to Tedious Time"
Now that the shepherds have come and gone, now that the Wise Men have made their appearing and disappearing, and now that the ceramic crèche is back in the box for another year...it is time to get back to ordinary time.
Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany are extraordinary. From waiting to satiating, the seasons are ripe for rigorous ritual and rhythm and songs and scriptures. These remind us that God has come among us...and remains so. "God moved into our neighborhood," as Eugene Peterson puts it.
Beautiful news. Bountiful news.
But now what? What is life like now that the extraordinary has become ordinary once again?
This is where the church steps in. The church...us...with our foibles and faux pas, takes up where the "Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright," leaves off. We take up the glow.
Though the church of Jesus Christ can oft be dim and dimwitted, ready or not, Jesus said WE are the light of the world. Ready or not, we already are.
So, we glow.
History shows that the church's glowing is sometimes as sharp as a laser. Other times, we barely smolder. But throughout, we do our best to tend the quiet flame of faith.
For me, "the routine of ordinary" can be tedious. A step forward, then a step back, and then the day is over.
I love the Oscar Wilde quotation about his struggle with productivity: "I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again."
Every writer knows that kind of circular work. Sometimes life advances by leaps and bounds. Growth spurts. The wind blows. The kite rises. The sky's the limit. Other days bring doldrums and you stand with kite string in hand as limp as a wet noodle.
Timing is everything; but Father Time marches on...even if at just a slow stroll.
Again, this is where church steps in. We accompany one another. No one can be responsible for another's spirituality; but we can be in responsible relationship to one another as we tend our spirituality.
I said at my son's ordination the other day, "The pastor has the best seat in the house." And I meant it. The pastor gets to walk with church folk as they do the heroic work of tending their own lives: from the ICU to the IRS. The pastor watches generations of a family cope with their "hopes and fears of all the years." The pastor stands alongside persons as they stand in the baptistry, at the marriage altar, outside the hospital nursery window, and at the graveside.
Some of life is terrific. Much of life is tedious. But all of life is holy.
Honored, am I, to have the best seat in the house...the church house...as the new year dawns and as we of Northside Drive do both large and small tasks, as we love and work, and as we let our lights shine, as best we can, fueled by the abiding love of God.

Deacon Profile
Patti Clark is a returning deacon and long-time member of NDBC. Originally from North Carolina, Patti and Jordan Clark joined in 1987 with 4 year old daughter Dorsett and 15 month old daughter Graham. The third daughter, Suzanne, was born into our church and precipitated the over-due dedication of the whole family in 1989. Patti and Jordan live in the Rivermeade neighborhood of Buckhead, Dorsett and husband Preston Davis live in Bessemer City, NC, Graham, husband Josh Mudd, and son Jay live in Smyrna and are part of our church and preschool. Suzanne Clark is now in graduate school in nursing in Birmingham and will be married at NDBC in June. Patti can go on and on about why she loves NDBC, but to put it in a nutshell...the people! She shares the congregation's appreciation of a theology that embraces the wide arms of God, the personal and communal journey of spiritual growth, and a love of traditional liturgy and music. She admires those in our church who give so much of themselves to serving others. She loves reading, book clubs, running (recently), her perfect dog Carly, UNC basketball, and welcoming friends and family into her home.
Her list of families include: Dan & Deborah Oakley; Jack & Joey Guynn; George & Amy Taylor; Julian Turner, Jr.; Ryan & Marsha King w/ Triston King; Linda Clark; Aline Cofield; Jonathan & Barbara Schroeder w/ Maria Schroeder; Mark & Melissa Bryson w/ Callie, Lindsey, Emily, and Katherine; Terrell Kilgore; Richard & Joyce Wilson; and Chelsea Clarke. |

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.
3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).
4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email. |
