Mike's Memos
By Rev. Michael Gregg Heeding the Signs: The Future of Christian Education, Part 2 Traditional approaches to education within the church do not seem to be working anymore. In many churches, Sunday School attendance is decreasing, children and youth are not attending or participating, and it remains a struggle to find and motivate teachers and volunteers to lead educational activities. Karen B. Tye, a professor at Eden Theological Seminary and Christian education guru, wonders if Christian education in a majority of congregations is a tired enterprise in need of reform. She sees it as often out of touch with adult and adolescent needs, employing models and procedures that have changed little over time. Churches must not be afraid to unhitch their wagons from the traditional Sunday School model, which was literally a school for poor children in England that began in the 1780s. The children learned to read and write there and it was the only schooling that many of them received after working in factories all week. However after compulsory state education was established a hundred years later, Sunday School became strictly a place for religious education. As technology and the spread of information grew over the next century, it became less necessary as the only means for Christian education. Today, many churches---even while remaining vibrant and healthy congregations---have dwindling attendance in Sunday School classes. It is these churches that have noticed Christian education happens in other places, not simply during the Sunday School hour. What might be the future of Christian education in Baptist churches when attendance in educational opportunities is decreasing? Rather than shying away from the decline of Sunday School attendance and the changing landscape of education in the church, parishioners need to reassess where education occurs in other areas of congregational life inside and outside of the building. Churches need to provide printed and electronic information, as well as verbally communicate how they hope to educate parishioners inside and outside their walls. Such an assessment moves Christian education to center stage in a positive way. Wooden Sunday School attendance signs should no longer be the prominent indication of the involvement of parishioners in educational opportunities and the vitality of the church. |
Christmas Poinsettias*
Sales begin Sunday, November 25
Our Annual Poinsettia Altar will be in place Sunday, December 16, and remain through Tuesday, Christmas Day. While altar flowers are always given to the Glory of God, it's our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas also in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. Each poinsettia plant is only $20, and order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use (simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate). Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office. The deadline for orders is December 9.
*U.S. tax regulations do not allow us to offer contribution credit for Easter & Christmas plants because the plants are returned to the giver. |
Hanging of the Green
The Worship and Music Ministry Team invite you to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, December 2. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. Fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex at 9:30 AM followed by a service at 9:45 AM, in lieu of Church School. During the service we will reflect on some of the Christian components of the season, and special music will be shared as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space. |

Giving Tree
Morningstar Children and Family Services
For most people Christmas is a time filled with memories of family, bountiful meals and cherished gifts. Imagine the holidays for a child who is removed from family and for whom family may hold few positive memories. Through the Giving Tree we can help the children in Morningstar's residential care feel the love and joy of the Christmas season.
Take a tag from the tree and return the UNWRAPPED gift to the church by December 16.
