Mosquito Repelling Plant?!

This plant has many names, such as "Citronella Plant", "Mosquito Plant", and "Scented Geranium". It does not contain actual Citronella (commonly found in bug sprays) but has a smell that is very similar to Citronella. Although the mere presence of this plant may not repel mosquitoes it is very effective when the leaves are crushed and the oil is rubbed on the skin.

The Buzz: Articles for Every Gardener
Benefits of Planting a Vegetable Garden:
8 Reasons Why YOU Should Start a Vegetable Garden

1. GET YOUR FAMILY HEALTHIER!
Having a garden of bountiful vegetables gives you the ability to chow down all those beneficial vitamins and nutrients while they are the strongest- straight outta the garden that is!

2. GIVE YOUR WALLET A BREAK!
As your vegetables become ripe and ready to harvest, your wallet will sigh in
relief as you give him some time off by picking up FRESH produce straight from your own backyard instead of at the grocery store! If you learn how to can and dry your harvest, you will be able to feed your family even after the growing season has ended.

3. MINIMIZE YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT!
As most of us know, vegetables taste and smell good, but by growing food in your own garden, or "Organically", you can also spare our Earth from unnecessary water and air pollution. For instance, if you grow your own vegetables, you will reduce the use of fossil fuels and the resulting pollution that can come from the transportation of fresh produce from all over the world to your supermarket.

4. GET HEALTHY BY EXERCISING!
Weeding, planting, watering and harvesting all can add a pretty good amount of physical activity to your day. If you have kids, have them join you (we all need a little weeding help sometimes!). However, make sure you stretch before and after rigorous planting activity and drink plenty of water. What most people love about gardening is how it can relax and de-stress your mind. Plus, it always feels good to get a little fresh air and sunshine!

5. GROW THE GOOD STUFF!
Having fresh food to enjoy is the best! How long has the food on your supermarket shelf been there? How long did it travel from the farm to your table? If your own garden vegetables taste better, you will be more likely to eat the healthy, fresh produce that you KNOW your body NEEDS.

6. BUILD UP YOUR PRIDE!
Being able to watch a small plant mature into nutritious produce that can feed your family is not only rewarding, but it is gratifying. Growing your own food is one of the most purposeful things that a human can do- it's work that directly helps you to thrive, nourish your family, and maintain your health.

7. STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE SAFETY OF YOUR FOOD!
With so many recalls on products such as peanut butter, spinach, tomatoes and more, many people have become concerned about food safety, and for good reasons. However, when you have the responsibility to decide how you want to grow your own food, you don't have to worry about contamination.

8. REDUCE YOUR WASTE!
Americans throw away approximately $600 worth of food away every year! It's a lot easier to throw away old vegetables from the store than it is to throw away something that you have patiently nurtured to grow over the course of several weeks. When it's "yours," you will probably be less likely to take it for granted and more likely to eat or preserve it before it goes into the compost pile.

This Weeks Recipe:
Smoky Panzanella with Market Vegetables

TOTAL TIME: 37 min

Prep: 15 min
Inactive Prep: 10 min
Cook: 12 min

YIELD:6 to 8 servings
LEVEL:Easy

INGREDIENTS:

1 loaf French bread, cut or torn into 1-inch cubes (about 6 cups)
Extra-virgin olive oil

1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1-inch dice
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1 orange bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1-inch dice
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, grated or pressed
1/2 cup olive oil
8 ounces smoked mozzarella, cut into 1/3-inch dice
8 ounces sugar snap peas, trimmed and sliced into thirds on the bias
8 ounces cherry heirloom tomatoes, halved
1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, toss the cubed bread with enough extra-virgin olive oil to coat liberally, and season with salt and pepper. Arrange the bread cubes in an even layer on one side of a large baking sheet. In the same mixing bowl, toss the diced peppers with some extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper and place them on the other side of the baking sheet. Place the baking sheet into the oven to bake until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the peppers have softened, 10 to 12 minutes. Keep an eye on it so the bread doesn't burn!

Meanwhile, make the vinaigrette. In a small mixing bowl, combine the vinegar, mustard and garlic. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while whisking. Season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper.

Once the bread is toasted, combine the bread and peppers with the smoked mozzarella, snap peas and tomatoes (you can use the same bowl you tossed the bread and peppers in). Toss the salad with the vinaigrette and add the torn basil leaves. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to develop.

"I just want to thank all of you at Beier's for providing such an extraordinary greenhouse in our community. The first visit to Beier's each spring is a highlight of my year. The masses of color, the promise of new varieties and beautiful garden art are so exciting. I know that there is a tremendous amount of work and planning that go into creating and maintaining such a top notch greenhouse. Thank you all. I know I will see you many times this season. I can't seem to drive by without stopping in for "just a few more petunias". -Stephanie Stevens, Loyal Customer
