The Buzz: Articles for Every Gardener
Sun-Dried Vegetables
Preserving the tradition in the
winter!

Sun-dried vegetables are available year round in jars, but we all know veggies from our own gardens make the best dishes ever. Our gardens may be put to bed for the season, but read on for a little tip to get that "sun-dried" flavor from grocery store veggies.

Drying tomatoes in the sun was one of the many inventive ways the Italians devised to ensure themselves of a supply of the vital vegetable all year round.

Since then sun-dried tomatoes have become as prized for their characteristic meaty flavor and texture as for their keeping qualities. Only relatively recently did the rest of the world wake up to their potential, much to the surprise of the Italians, who had been using them for centuries.

The vegetables are cut into slices, sprinkled with salt and then laid out on trays in the sun like tomatoes. If you want, you can get a roughly similar effect at home by putting the vegetable slices on trays in a very low oven for several hours.

This Weeks Recipe:
Peppermint Crunch Puppy Chow

Four ingredients is all it takes. No bake, no chilling, no sweat, no fret. The magical mixture of rice Chex cereal, white chocolate, crushed candy canes, and powdered sugar shake together to make your new favorite holiday treat.

First, melt the white chocolate. No magic tricks here - just melt in the microwave according to package directions. Use Bakers White Chocolate bars. It's so smooth, creamy, and melts in the microwave SO easily.

Once melted, pour the white chocolate over the Chex cereal. Go with the Rice Chex Cereal over the Corn Chex when making puppy chow. The Rice variety hardly has any flavor - perfect for recipes like this.

Next, crush up some festive candy canes and throw them into the mix -You can use candy canes with the green and red striped variety for an added pop of color. Regular candy canes will work just fine.

The fourth and final ingredient is your confectioners sugar. This is the fun part. Pour 1 cup of the soft powdery sugar into a large ziplock bag. Add your melty white chocolate chex/candy canes and go to town.

Shake shake shake!
