August Garden Checklist 

August is just around the corner. Here is a quick checklist of things to do in the garden this month to insure successful wintering over.

All Gardens

Replenish the mulch. Now is a good time to turn over and stir up any mulch you have applied in the spring. Mulch tends to get matted down (especially when there has been a lot of rain). 

 

Remove diseased or insect laden plants. Clean these icky plants out of your gardens and either burn or compost properly to keep disease and insects from spreading everywhere. 

 

Watch the fertilizer regimen. Fertilize perennials, shrubs, fruit plants and trees one more time and then stop. Feeding these long-lived plants too close to frsot doesn't give them time to settle down for winter. Also, feed vegetable gardens lightly now. It's time for them to put their energy into producing fruit, not vines and leaves.
