How to Plant a Tree 

Dig a hole two times the size of the container that the tree was purchased in. Replace 1/3 of the dirt with a combined soil (cow manure & peat) or a loamy substance. Then put 2" of soil on top of that.

Upon initial planting use Espoma Bio-Tone. This helps the root system adjust to the shock of being planted. Do not use any other fertilizer at this time.

Press soil firmly around the roots well and fill the hole with remaining soil. Water thoroughly for the first two weeks and accordingly thereafter. Good watering practices result in plants that establish more rapidly and thus become more quickly resistant to drought, pests, and disease.

One foot away from the trunk of the tree, make an indent 3" deep and fill with cow manure. This indent will also halpe the water soak in easily. Apply 3-4" of organic mulch over the planted area.

Tips:
Little if any pruning should be necessary at the time of transplant.

Only fertilize trees in the Spring when the plants are starting new growth. Apply fertilizer only after you water the plant.
 
It is a good idea to give your trees a good drenching of water just before the first frost. This may help eliminate winter kill on the roots.

Planting a tree too deeply and under or overwatering are among the most common and serious planting errors.

Flowering trees make beautiful, but tricky backdrops! We photographers start drooling as soon as the buds open up on the flowering trees and bushes, so you can easily talk us into spring sessions. Unfortunately, there's such a short window of opportunity. I talked to a client over Memorial weekend about their upcoming session and she showed me a picture of a beautiful ornamental plum tree in their yard. When I arrived, seven days later, there were no blooms left!
