Growing Edibles
Beier's has a wide variety of nursery products that will produce a hardy crop of edibles for your eating, canning, and baking pleasures. Some old, such as rhubarb and raspberries, and others new like honey berries and josta berry.
Blueberries Varieties offered: Chippewa, North Blue, North Country, Polaris and Superior. All hardy for Zone 3. For best results, plant two different varieties. Soil acidity is crucial for successful growth. Great for fresh eating and freezing.
Cherry Nan King Bush Cherry Hardy to zone 2. Plant 4 to 6 feet apart to allow for growth. May need up to four years for fruit production. Great for jams, jellies, and fresh eating.
Chokeberry Autumn Magic Hardy to zone 3 and tolerant of a wide rage of soils. Flowers in May and produces black berries in the fall. Fruit is very tart. Best used in jams and jellies.
Gooseberry Varieties available: Pixwell and Hinnomaki Red. Self fruitful plants bear fruit the second year. Big green berries are tempting for pies and preserves. Easy to pick. Withstands drought. Hardy to zone 3.
Josta Berry Similar but sweeter than the Gooseberry. Tangy flavor of the fruit is a mix of grape, blueberry and kiwi fruit. Great in jams, jellies, pies, and fresh. Hardy to zone 3.
Raspberries Varieties available: Thornless, Heritage, and Latham. For pollination to produce fruits, you need to plant two varieties. Thornless and Latham are June bearing plants. Heritage is an everbearing plant.
Rhubarb Varieties available: Canada Red and Valentine. Naturally sweet and dependable cold hardy. Great for baking and preserving. Valentine bears sooner stalk harvests.
Grapes Varieties available: Worden (zone 4), Marquette (zone 4), Valient, and Beta. Great multi-purpose fruit used for wine, baked goods, jams, jellies, and fresh off the vine.
Honey Berries Varieties Available: Borealis, Cinderella, Tundra, Indigo Gem, and Berry Blue. All hardy to zone 3. Must have two plants and one must be a pollinator. Cinderella and Berry Blue are pollinators. Best eaten fresh, in ice cream, or for jams and jellies.
Other Edibles available include horseradish, garlic, elderberry, currants, shallots, strawberries, and chokecherry.
