Lilium Longiflorum
Get the Most Out of Your Easter Lilies

With their large, white, trumpet-shaped flowers and wonderful fragrance, it's no wonder this variety has become a traditional Easter treat.

Keep your Easter Lily blooming
  • Display your plant in indirect sunlight.
  • Avoid an area with cold drafts or direct heat.
  • Remove the yellow anthers from the flower centers. This helps prolongs the life and prevents staining of blossoms.
  • Cool temperature (60-65 degrees) will prolong bloom life.
  • Water only when the soil becomes dry to the touch.
  • If you leave a decorative wrapper on your plant, be sure water is not pooling between the pot and wrapper.
  • Remove flowers as they fade and wither.
Growing an Easter Lily in the garden
The Easter Lily is not hardy for our strong Minnesota winters and will not come back next season. However, if planted outside, you may be able to force a second bloom time.
  • Once the Lily has finished blooming, and all danger of frost has passed, move the pot to a sunny location outdoors.
  • Good drainage is essential for lilies. Use a well draining planting medium in this location.
  • Set the entire pot in and plant into the ground until foliage has died back, then gently remove it from the pot and plant directly into the ground.
  • The bulb should be about three inches below the soil surface.
  • Cut the stems back to the ground.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Feed monthly with 10-10-10 all purpose fertilizer.
New shoots should begin to appear in a short time, and with any luck, your lily may bloom again in late summer.
