A Quick Buzz...
Beier's Greenhouse Banner
Issue: 22      August 11th, 2013
Greetings from Beiers!

Dear ,

We hope you have had as much excitement and

fun this last week as we have!

We found a surprise in the Greenhouse.... a CAT! And then, just after she was leaving with Tianna Seeley for a new home, we found another surprise... Kittens!

Tianna rushed the Momma back from Duluth

so that she could be with her kittens. They are now reunited!

These kittens are going to need homes once they are grown enough to leave their mom! If you or someone you know would like to take one of the kittens (free of charge of course!) then please send an email to: beiersgreenhouse@hotmail.com

with the subject: Beier's Kittens

Aside from the fact that there are kittens living in the greenhouse distracting the employees (myself included) it is nice having some new greenhouse friends around!

Beier's is Still Blooming Beautifully!

PERENNIAL LANDSCAPE
In Honor of Our New Friends,
This Week's Featured Perennial is..... CATNIP!
Here is part of an article that we adapted from: Healing From Home
Catnip is a widely known herb for cats, but did you know that catnip also contains medicinal qualities for humans? Before you get too many thoughts going through your head, I will tell you that catnip has about the opposite effect on humans as it does on cats. It has been used for hundreds of years as a mild sedative and digestive aid. Catnip (Nepata cataria  also known as Catmint or Field Balm) is a member of the mint family (Labiatae). It is a perennial herb. The strong minty aroma is the nepetalactone contained in catnip. This is the substance that binds to the olfactory receptors of cats, typically resulting in temporary euphoria. But enough about cats, let's look at some catnip uses for humans!
  • Mild Sedative - This is probably the most popular uses for catnip. It's soothing, calming properties make it an excellent remedy for insomnia or just nervous tension.
  • Digestion - Catnip is antispasmodic and can help calm upset stomachs, reduce gas, flatulence, bloating, heartburn and diarrhea.
  • Muscle Spasms - Again it's antispamodic properties help prevent and relieve muscle spasms.
  • Stimulates Menstrual Flow - For this reason pregnant women should avoid using catnip!
  • Chest Congestion - Sip a cup of hot catnip tea and breathe in the vapors to help relieve congestion from a cold or flu.
  • Reduce Fevers - Catnip tea will help promote sweating so keep sipping your tea until the fever breaks.
  • Catnip Insect Repellent - The oils in catnip are a natural insect repellent. You can use the fresh plant by rubbing directly on your skin or use a tincture or catnip essential oil to make your own deet-free repellent.
