FEATURED ARTICLES
Plants That THRIVE Indoors!
We recently received some great customer feedback about indoor plants and a nice picture to accompany it! As a result, we thought it would be nice to have an email that featured houseplants and succulents.

GREAT FEEDBACK:
"Beier's Greenhouse always has the best selection of plants for every gardener! My favorites are the succulents and houseplants that I can keep growing inside all year round! These are my Living Stones, Aloe, and other succulents! Thank you for bringing GREAT PLANT VARIETIES to your Greenhouse! It's always SO FUN!"

Still Not Convinced About Having Houseplants?
Check out this Article that we found from Bayer about
the Health Benefits from having Indoor Houseplants!

1. Help you breath easier- Adding plants to interior spaces increase oxygen in the room through photosynthesis of the plant.

2. Releasing water- as part of photosynthesis, plants release moisture vapor which increase humidity in the air around them.Studies at the Agricultural University of Norway document that using plants in interior spaces decreases the incidence of dry skin, colds, sore throats and dry coughs.

3. Purifying the Air- Plants remove toxins from air - up to 87 percent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) every 24 hours, according to NASA research. VOCs include substances like formaldehyde (present in rugs, vinyl, cigarette smoke and grocery bags), benzene and trichloroethylene (both found in man-made fibers, inks, solvents and paint). Benzene is commonly found in high concentrations in study settings, where books and printed papers abound.

4. Improving Health- Adding plants to hospital rooms speeds recovery rates of surgical patients, according to researchers at Kansas State University. Compared to patients in rooms without plants, patients in rooms with plants request less pain medication, have lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue and anxiety, and are released from the hospital sooner. The Dutch Product Board for Horticulture commissioned a workplace study that discovered that adding plants to office settings decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. In another study by the Agricultural University of Norway, sickness rates fell by more than 60 percent in offices with plants.

5. Sharpening Focus- A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Circencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70 percent greater attentiveness when they're taught in rooms containing plants. In the same study, attendance was also higher for lectures given in classrooms with plants.

SUCCULENTS
Succulents are always in style. With juicy leaves, stems, or roots, succulents form a vast and diverse group of plants, offering easy-care choices for your home. Plus, they look stunning planted alone or as companions.

The color variation of succulents seems almost endless: blue-green, chartreuse, pink, red, yellow, white, burgundy, almost black, variegated, and more. The leaves may be rounded, needlelike, berrylike, ruffled, or spiky. Many have an enticing "touch-me" quality -- even cacti.

**All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.

While some succulents have somewhat exact care requirements, most are easy to grow because they evolved with special water-storage tissues that allow them to survive in environments that are too dry for most other plants.

Succulents like the dry humidity and warm conditions found in most homes, and while they like direct light, they can adapt to lower light. They all prefer a fast-draining potting medium that's not watered too often. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

LIVING STONES

Popularly called "Living Stones", Lithops are some of the world's most fascinating plants! Since their discovery by John Burchell in 1811 when "on picking up from the stony ground what was supposed a curiously shaped pebble, it proved to be a plant", Lithops have been avidly sought by the collector of succulent plants. Resembling the pebbles and stones among which they grow in their African habitat, they have become favorites of the collector of strange and unusual plants. Their subtle colors of gray, brown, rust, green and pink, combined with their fantastically intricate markings, make them most desirable additions to any plant collection. Being small plants, a representative collection can be grown on a patio table, a sunny windowsill, a shelf in the greenhouse, or under lights, as many apartment dwellers are now doing. A solitary, daisy-like flower is produced by each leaf pair in late summer.

WE ARE ALL OUT OF LIVING STONES THIS SEASON, BUT WE WILL HAVE MORE ARRIVING IN THE SPRING!

AIR PLANTS

Come enjoy the mystery behind "air plants" at Beier's Greenhouse. Air plants (Tillandsias) take all their water and nutrients through the leaf system, none or very minimal amounts are absorbed by the root system. This is the first year that we have brought in Air Plants for our customers by request! Come get yours now for a non maintenance plant that looks good! We also have the glass orbs that you see (Above left) that can be hung up!
