Relay For Life
July 19th, 2013
Longyear Park, Coleraine, MN

Bonnie Stotts, the owner of Beier's Greenhouse was chosen to be an Fight Back Chair member this year and she will be giving a speech.
2013 is the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society and this theme will be incorporated into RFL activities. Each team will be able to choose a decade and decorate their campsite accordingly.
The mission of RFL is that those lost to cancer will be remembered, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society which provides information and resources for those dealing with cancer at 1-800-ACS-234 or www.cancer.org. Additional information on RFL is available from ACS Staff Partner Jean Cyronek at 218-910-0492.
Since the first Relay For Life in 1985, over $4 million has been raised for research and services by the American Cancer Society.
What Happens at a Relay Event There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below: Survivors Lap Relay starts with a Survivors Lap - an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we've achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.
Luminaries may be purchased during the event prior to the lighting ceremony. The luminaries burn throughout the evening and offer a beautiful sight to park visitors. Relay For Life is the largest annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is dedicated to the hope that those lost to cancer will be remembered, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Grow your own fresh fruit!
Currant 'Red Lake'
Currant, 'Red Lake' is the finest red currant with large, deep red berries. It is very strong, vigorous, productive and tasty. It is also the most widely grown red currant with an extended fruiting season! This is a popular high-yield variety on a shrub, that forms a decorative hedge even when not in fruit. 'Red Lake' has a long ripening season beginning in late spring and continuing into the summer months. Some of the many uses of the fruit are jam, jelly, syrup, wine and pastry. The red berries also attract many kinds of birds. The Red Lake berries are packed with an intense flavor jelly makers love. The cold hardiest of quality currants, 'Red Lake' often bears full-bodied fruit the first year after planting. Yields are reliably large; self-pollinating. Used in fruit or vegetable gardens. This plant can also make an attractive ornamental hedge in the landscape.

It is best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers cool summer climates. Some part afternoon shade is appreciated in hot summer climates. Best sited in locations protected from strong winter winds and frost pockets. Appreciates a good organic mulch for the root zone. Water regularly as needed to keep soils uniformly moist. Avoid overhead watering however. Plants are self-fertile. Space 3' apart. Prune as needed during the dormant season. It is generally recommended that stems older than 3 years on red currants be removed. May take 4-5 years for plants to become well-established and reach full fruit-bearing potential.
Fresh Red Currant Scone Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into pieces
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup Greek vanilla yogurt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon grated orange zest (about 1 large orange)
- 1 cup red lake currants (I froze fresh currants the day before so they would be sturdier when mixing in, but fresh is fine too. Just fold in carefully--they are delicate berries)
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar (I used an orange ginger sugar I had on hand, but plain will do)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Combine dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add the butter and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingers.
- Stir the eggs, yogurt, vanilla extract, and orange zest together.
- Add to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined and a similar consistency to cookie dough. Stir in the blueberries.
- Form dough into 12 equal-sized balls and place approximately 2 inches apart on a greased (or non-stick) cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 10 minutes, rotate the tray, and bake for another 10 minutes until slightly golden on the edges and a cake tester comes out clean.
- Serve warm or cooled.
