   Meet our new Audiologist...
Allison Brower
allison brower

Dr. Brower received her Master's degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and her Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Florida.  She received her Audiology fellowship training at the Children's Hospital Colorado where she served as a diagnostic and cochlear implant audiologist, as well as the program director of the newborn hearing screening program.  Dr. Brower's passion for early identification and intervention of hearing loss in children inspired her to accept a position at National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) in Sydney, Australia in 2008.  While at NAL, she served as a pediatric research audiologist on the Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Impairment (LOCHI) study led by Dr. Teresa Ching. Dr. Brower also served as the lead research audiologist on the Effects of frequency compression on outcomes of school-aged children study.  Returning to the United States in 2010, Dr. Brower accepted a position at the California Ear Institute in Palo Alto, CA where she served as the clinic's cochlear implant audiologist for adults and pediatrics. In addition, Dr. Brower worked as an independent contractor for the Let Them Hear Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the miracle of hearing to those who do not have access to sound, both in the local neighborhoods and around the world. Her most recent duty included the completion of a 230-page handbook for parents of children with newly identified hearing loss. The book is currently being readied for publication.

Dr. Brower joined the Audiology group at UCH in October 2012. She provides comprehensive hearing services to adult and pediatric patients. She specializes in cochlear implants and pediatrics. Dr. Brower is extremely excited to be residing in Colorado again and working with the team at the world-renowned Marion Downs Hearing Center.

Dr. Brower loves nature and the outdoors in all seasons. She spends her free time hiking, running, snowboarding, and practicing yoga. She received her yoga teacher training certificate in 2010 and offers group and private yoga instruction in her free time. When she feels like relaxing, she can always curl up with a good book or cook a delicious meal.

Welcome Dr. Brower!

2012 Holiday Party
picture of santa
Last Saturday we had the pleasure of welcoming over 100 children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families to our 2012 Deaf and Hard of Hearing Holiday Party.

The event began with the Mountain View Elementary School Signing Choir. Nearly 30 children performed many holiday songs using American Sign Language. The performance was inspirational and beautiful.

Santa made a surprise visit and signed with all the students as they told him what they wanted for Christmas. Santa gave each student a book to take home and read over the holiday. Thank you to the Columbine Sertoma Club and the Delta Zeta Sorority for donating such a wonderful collection of books. The children were enamoured with their gifts.

Colorado Hands and Voices provided fun crafts and games for all the children. Participants had the opportunity to make Wreaths, Holiday Decor, and Christmas Cookies.

The event was a great success and we were thrilled with the turnout. Thank you to all who joined us to celebrate the holidays.

If you missed this year, keep your eyes peeled for our 2013 Holiday Party, and all the fun that entails.

This event was jointly sponsored by the Marion Downs Hearing Center, Colorado Families for Hands & Voices, and The Early Education Programs at Colorado School for  the Deaf and the Blind
and the Marion Downs Hearing Center Foundation.

More than a Gesture

As a 501 C (3) nonprofit organization the Marion Downs Hearing Center Foundation relies on donations from people like you. Your gift supports the vision of Marion Downs, "to bring about the best in services to those with hearing and communication needs". Your financial gift is recognized as an expression of your pure generosity and commitment to this vision and what the Marion Downs Hearing Center is making possible in the world. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need to gather together to make our commitments known.

The way of the heart

We could make our financial goal in many ways, but the only way we are interested in is the way of the heart, coming together with an authentic gift. Across the community people are talking to each other-sharing how they feel and what they think about what is going on in the world. Last week through our Colorado Gives Day campaign, we received gifts that ranged from 10 dollars to over $1,000, yet it was not just the amount that was impressive but the joy and integrity so obvious in the giver. Please take a moment today to consider what gift you might give that would be more than a gesture-a gift you would be proud to give.

Meet Dr. Jerry Northern our MDHC Signing Santa

Were you wondering who the man was behind our red suit?

Meet Dr. Jerry Northern, Head of Audiology Services at the University of Colorado Medical Center and School of Medicine 1970-1996

" A life-time as an audiologist, working with children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing, was the perfect career for me. I come from a proud lineage of deafness as I was raised from the age of 2 years by my deaf grandparents - graduates of Gallaudet University; their daughter (my aunt, also a graduate of Gallaudet), was a teacher of the deaf for nearly 40 years in Kansas and California; and I earned a Master's Degree from Gallaudet in Deaf Education. And, now my daughter, Amy, is a Teacher-Director in Spokane, WA at the H.O.P.E. Pre-school for Children who are deaf or hard of hearing.   Indeed, we have had 4-generations of our family dealing with deafness!

I can't imagine any other working environment that would have provided me with such a wonderfully wide variety of opportunities and experiences. Working as an audiologist partner with Marion Downs for more than 26 years was inspirational, educational and incredibly entertaining! My audiology career has been both fun and exciting with extensive teaching and clinical activities, military audiology, medical-legal work, scientific research, writing articles and textbooks (including a "best seller": Hearing in Children (6 editions) co-authored with Marion Downs. I've been so fortunate to have had a career for nearly 50 year that provided me such great gratification to work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families".
