Saint Paul's Anglican Church, Monte-Carlo -- a community of Light on the Côte d'Azur
Mothering Sunday this week!
Mothering Sunday this week
The Sunday Club will help lead our Sunday morning congregation in the celebration of Mothering Sunday this week at Saint Paul's Church. Young people will help with the readings, the prayers and various duties like taking up the Sunday collection. Father Walter will tell the story of the "Prodigal Son" and help the children (young and old) reflect on the powerful love our parents have for us.
Evensong 6 March at 5 p.m.
This year, celebrating our common tradition of Morning and Evening Prayer, the Christian churches in Monaco will come to Saint Paul's for Anglican Choral Evensong with the support of the enlarged (Carol Service) Choir. Do plan to join us this Sunday, 6 March at 5 p.m.
Farewell Robie!
Popular Lecture
Robie Angeles-Ramirez
On Sunday 28th February, our Sunday Club coordinator, Jonny Richardson was pleased to present Robie Angeles-Ramirez (centre) with a commemorative Bible in recognition of her work as our Sunday Club helper for the past 5 and a half years. Robie began this very special ministry at Saint Paul's in September 2010 and over the years has been on hand, week after week, to help our Sunday Club volunteer teachers with the Sunday lessons. Among other things, Robie sets up for Sunday Club sessions, often does the teaching herself, and helps the children learn the songs they sing for special services. Because our Sunday Club parents take turns leading the lessons each week, Robie has provided continuity from Sunday to Sunday. She knows all of the children really well, and the children have grown to love her very much. We wish Robie well as she moves on to other duties at her church in Nice, but she will be dearly missed!
Lecture on Aaron Messiah
A lecture on the life and work of the important Riviera architect Aaron Messiah (1858-1936) attracted the interest of many from the Riviera community on Thursday evening 25th February. Messiah was the architect and builder of many important buildings on the Riviera including Saint Paul's Church which he began to design in 1914 and eventually supervised its construction in 1924. Daniel Jessula, Messiah's great grandson, introduced his illustrious ancestor's family history: the family's migration from exile from the Spain of Queen Isabella, to Gibraltar via Morocco, and eventually to settle in Nice, on the French Riviera. Mr Jessula also spoke about his great grandfather's character, work ethic, and interests.Dr Judit Kiraly joined Mr Jessula for the public lecture, a student of the architecture on the Riviera, Dr Kiraly outlined the career of Aaron Messiah, focusing in particular on the many famous villas, gardens and public buildings designed by this great figure in the history of Riviera architecture.

Emily Rolfe's PeaceJam Project

Emily with her father Ben Rolfe
Emily Rolfe (pictured above and with her father, Ben) took a few minutes at the end of the service on 28th February to present a project she has taken on in preparation for the annual  Monaco "PeaceJam" Conference, that will take place over the weekend of 11-12 June. Each year PeaceJam honours one of the Nobel Peace Prize recipients, presenting a documentary on their life and work as part of the annual Monte-Carlo Television Festival. The series of PeaceJam conferences began 2 years ago with Archbishop Tutu as the guest honouree. This year PeaceJam will honour Rigoberta Menchu Tum who received the Nobel Peace prize in 1992 for her work as a peaceful advocate of native people's rights in Central America.

As part of the conference, the young participants are asked to develop a project to promote, in their own way, the goal of peace on our planet. Emily has chosen to focus her efforts on raising funds in support of the work of the UN foundation "Nothing But Nets". This charity provides mosquito bed netting to protect children in areas where malaria and now the zika virus are rampant.

To raise funds for this charity, Emily came to church with a tray full of delicious chocolat chip biscuits which she sold for €2 each for the charity. Biscuit lovers had to move quickly because the plate emptied in very short order, and Emily came away with quite a good start to her PeaceJam fund raising efforts. If you missed your chance to enjoy one of Emily's tasty biscuits, do not worry, more are being prepared for sale, following Sunday services at Saint Paul's in weeks to come -- and other children in the Sunday Club are pitching in to help as well. Great work Emily and good luck with your PeaceJam project!

Organ Restored and Revamped!
Organ restored_

Our church organist, Gottfried Kappen, and the Saint Paul's Church Choir are delighted with the results of work to improve and refurbish the church organ. Organ builder Saverio Tamburini completed a major restoration of the pipe organ at Saint Paul's Church on Friday 26 February, following 3 weeks of work. As reported earlier, this restoration involved a thorough cleaning of the instrument, replacement of the bellows and, most importantly, a complete re-wiring of the instrument to meet the requirements of the building code (the addition of grounding) and to bring the electronics of the instrument up to 21st century standards. Pictured here the new "mother board" of the revamped organ with some of the organ's wooden "flute" pipes.
