Job Burnout - Compassion Fatigue
Burnout is a condition in which an individual has become physically and emotionally tired after a difficult job has been performed over a long period of time. Employees exposed to unresolved interpersonal conflicts, undefined work tasks, overwork, and a lack of support may become victims of burnout. When an employee feels job stress or complains of emotional fatigue or depletion it can cost the agency money. What are you doing as an employer to maintain healthy employees?
The frustration experienced first may evolve into anger. In later
stages, the worker suffers from anxiety and fear, depression, and, in extreme cases, despair. Physical symptoms are accompanied by a decline in performance, withdrawal, interpersonal problems, substance abuse in an attempt to self-medicate, illness and absenteeism, and a feeling of meaninglessness. Negative emotions such as feelings of frustration, anger, dissatisfaction, and nervousness usually become a big part of this worker's life and work. Caught in a burnout cycle, the worker can experience these negative emotions quite often until they become chronic.
Some examples of burnout-prone professions are:
- Professions involving life or death decisions
- Managers and workers working under demanding time schedules
- Human service professions
How to Identify a Case of Burnout
Employees should check themselves periodically for burnout by asking the following:
- How often do I feel run down and drained of physical or emotional energy?
- How often do I think negatively about my job?
- How often do I get irritated by small problems or by my coworkers and supervisor?
- How often do I feel misunderstood or unappreciated in the workplace?
- How often do I feel under pressure to succeed?
- How often do I feel I am in the wrong organization or the wrong profession?
- How often do I feel there is more work to do than can practically be done?

Collaborative Divorce
I am writing to you about Collaborative Divorce. It is actually possible for people to divorce quietly, professionally and with dignity. Folks can actually move on with their lives in an empowering way using this process. There is no commandment that reasonably intelligent people hire "gunslingers" to go to court and spend tens of thousands of their dollars to end a marriage. One of the problems with traditional litigation-based divorce where children are involved is that it does not take into account the devastation left in its wake and the failure to assist people in getting on with their lives. It does not empower people to take charge of their divorce. The Collaborative Divorce law process requires that the parties, not the lawyers and judge, be the authors of their divorce. The "aftermath" of Collaborative Divorce includes people who learn how to treat each other with some measure of respect and a resolution that works for both parties and their children. The process of learning to co-parent effectively as single people should start at the time the divorce is started not after much damage has been done in litigation.
The process of Collaborative Divorce law, although in use for two decades in many states, is finally gaining momentum in Florida but greater public awareness is needed. While the therapeutic community has some knowledge of Collaborative Divorce, there is a need for more information about the benefits of this process.
My office also provides legal services in the more traditional, litigation-based method of divorcing while this process gains momentum in the overall community. While I encourage my clients to investigate Collaborative Divorce, many times the other spouse will not engage in the process and so there is still the need for the traditional delivery of family law services (i.e. litigation) which I have been doing for over 20 years as well.
I am including herein brochures about the Collaborative Divorce law process for your review and to provide to your clients. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or questions. This is a process which requires the input of the therapeutic community and I solicit your insight and comments.
Sincerely,
Joseph M. ConsidineLaw Offices of Joseph M. Considine, P.A. A Florida Professional Association Village Commerce Centre 5201 Village Boulevard, Suite C West Palm Beach, Florida 33407 (561) 655-8081

2013 Hat's off to the BabyBoomer Generation!
It's 2013 already and taxes are being filed. Are you one of the individuals this year yearning for job satisfaction? What's holding you back? Reach for the star's Employer's are you making every effort to maintain the qualified employee? Retention efforts cost significant dollar's.
.
Did you know that many employers are afraid of the potential future shortage of skilled employees? This is one of the major reasons why they offer unusual perks to keep us baby boomers on the job. They don't want a large and experienced work force to walk out the door. More and more employers are hiring an increased number of part-time workers and empowering them to create their own, personalized, flexible work schedules. Ladies, play your cards correctly and negotiate a flexible work schedule to meet your lifestyle and needs.
Most surveys will agree that 76% of baby boomers intend to keep working and earning in retirement, although many say they will "retire" from their current job/career at around age 64 and then jump into an entirely new job or career. There is information on Social Security and what we female boomers need to know ! Ladies, it is not too late to plan and prepare. By the year 2030, we expect to see 57.8 million baby boomers still living; and, of this population, 54.9 percent would be female. That year, boomers will be between ages 66 and 84 http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/usinterimproj/

Good leaders motivate individuals, groups, and even whole organizations to perform at a high level and achieve their goals. Conversely, a lack of effective leadership is often a contributing factor to poor performance.
