November 2012

Greetings!

Silvernail Consultant Services wishes everyone a happy and healthy November and thanksgiving!

Scientists are finding that an attitude of gratitude is a powerful contributor to a happy life. Some believe that it may be the single most effective way to increase happiness. In this article, we explore what it means to have gratitude, the power of gratitude and ways of cultivating gratitude.

For the past two decades SCS has been collecting gift cards and Toys for needy children and families impacted by family violence, displacement and family transitional stress. We ask our readers to consider donating any of the following items this year to a family in need.

Donations may be sent to SCS at PO Box 18745 WPB Fla 33416.

We are looking for:
  • Gift cards to Publix, WinnDixie, Target, Walmart or Kmart.
  • Bed pillows, sheets, toothpaste, hygiene items,
  • Used lap top for teens,
  • Size 7W, 8, 8W flat shoes for teens in shelter care.

We have 15 families to reach this year and over 40 children. Toys for children from ages 8 months to 17.

It's a message fitting for the season and one that gives a whole new meaning to the adage, to give is to receive. Acts of generosity, research shows, don't just lead to emotional satisfaction; they actually promote physical health and healing. It's more than good karma of course.

Altruism or Volunteering, giving back or reaching out to help, eases the stress in the body, which results in these beneficial health factors:
  1. Possibly strengthening the immune-system.
  2. A decrease in both the intensity and the awareness of physical pain.
  3. Activation of the emotions that are vital to the maintaining good health.
  4. Reduction of the incidence of attitudes, such as chronic hostility, that negatively arouse and damage the body.
  5. The multiple benefits to the body's systems provided by stress relief.
  6. Experiencing a "helper's high," a rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm, after performing a kind act.
  7. This initial rush from the "Helper's High" is followed by a longer-lasting period of improved emotional well-being.
  8. Release of the body's natural painkillers, the endorphins as part of the "Helper's High."

Recover. Restore. Rebuild.
TRN

People's behaviors are influenced by environmental factors. For instance, addicts in the recovery stage and living in a sober, drug-free, and supportive environment feel that they have more control over their environment may be an option for you.  Sober living or intensive out patient treatment can assist and improve your chances of recovery.  Holidays for some people are a tough time.

Being in a supportive environment

Modeling helps shape positive, sober, and drug-free behavior in addicts. For instance, addicts in their recovery stage may emulate a sponsor modeling healthy recovery behavior. This sponsor will demonstrate to the newly recovering individual how to implement certain recovery steps and tools into his or her life to develop stronger relapse prevention strategies. Moreover, by watching the sponsor, the newly recovering person will begin using the recovery slogans and resources used by his or her sponsor.

Total Recovery Now encourages you to develop supports and attend various self help programs.

Our highly trained therapist utilize therapy approaches such as CBT, Matrix and Kelly models of treatment. These models highlight the powerful link between what a person thinks about himself or herself or a situation, how this affects what he or she feels physically and emotionally, and how he or she behaves in that situation. In short, it educates alcohol- or drug-dependent individuals to change the way they think about their substance abuse and to learn new ways to cope with the situations and circumstances that led to their drinking or taking drugs in the past.

Let us help you begin your journey and live a substance free lifestyle. Embrace life call TRN at 561.822.3620 or visit www.totalrecoverynow.com.

Baby Boomers

Married boomer women are more than six times more likely to share responsibility for savings and investments compared to their mothers' generation. How financially secure do you feel?  Fewer boomers may be as secure in retirement. It has been reported by AARP that nearly half have a traditional pension plans, 50% have a 401(k) and 50% have an IRA. Nearly 70% of boomers have employee or retiree health insurance. And, about one third have long-term care insurance. One-third of the Boomer population says they plan to take Social Security when they turn 62; the rest plan to take Social Security at age 65 or later. In the past, those who took Social Security early did so for health reasons. (AARP).

Most surveys will agree that 76% of baby boomers intend to keep working and earning in retirement, although many say they will "retire" from their current job/career at around age 64 and then jump into an entirely new job or career

How many ham and cheese sandwiches will get me drunk?

By Snow P.

When I was a few months sober I heard about the allergy that sets up a compulsion in our bodies that real alcoholics are powerless over.  Certainly, when I had Delirium Tremens when I was 25 and bugs were crawling all over me, I had convinced myself that it was an "allergic" reaction. I had no idea how true that was.

Information for Professionals on ADD (ADHD)

Remember when we talked about "hyperkenisis" as if the primary issue in what we now call ADD (ADHD) was hyperacitivity? Remember when most professionals thought that only boys were affected? Remember when we thought children "outgrew" ADD (ADHD)? Remember when there were only one or two medications used to treat ADD (ADHD)?

We now know is that ADD (ADHD) is a very complex disorder that is often accompanied by other conditions - requiring a careful differential diagnosis and a complex treatment approach. ADD (ADHD) is the most highly researched childhood psychiatric disorder, and research on adults is now growing rapidly. As a busy professional, it's hard to keep up.
