Dear  ,

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

Jim headshot
Jim Campanella

I believe we have the finest employees in the business caring for your property. Many companies will claim they have the best people working for them. It is an easy claim to make and a hard one to prove.

You've granted us the honor and responsibility to care for your private property. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. Before a new Lawn Dawg employee is ever sent to your property they have gone through drug screening, a criminal background check and a driving record inspection. We also do random drug screenings every quarter. They go through a comprehensive 10-day training program that includes classroom training and in-field training. Then they must pass a competency exam before getting assigned to their own route.

Our training doesn't end there. On-going training includes regional meetings, classroom training, field training and safety training. There is a weekly training update sent by our staff agronomist, Bob Mann. Bob and Ron Connor, our Fleet & Safety Manager, conduct field audits and make unannounced visits throughout the year to verify our field employees are obeying our strict professional standards. They are trained and re-trained on the proper use, maintenance and calibration of their application equipment and the products we use. But it doesn't stop here, we also hold training sessions on communication skills and professionalism.

We require all our employees to knock on your door and/or ring the bell when they arrive to your property. I assure you they are dedicated, honest, caring service professionals who take great pride in their work. Please let me know if you agree!

Sincerely,

Jim Campanella

Preparing Your Lawn Mower for Spring!

By Bob Mann, Corporate Agronomist

Still looking out my office window here on Cape Cod at over a foot of snow on the ground that is slowly, but surely, melting.  It seems like it will be forever before it will be time to break out the mower to cut the lawn but the time is now to spend a few minutes preparing for that first cut.

As it the case with any piece of equipment, a little bit of preventive maintenance goes a long way.  My current lawn mower, a nice little John Deere tractor, was purchased by me on E-Bay from a very aggravated homeowner who typed his description of the mower IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ABOUT HOW THE MOWER WOULD NOT START!  His anger at this inanimate object was palpable.  I could not resist the opportunity.

Spring is Here!
By Jon Waterhouse, East Regional Manager

Is this snow ever going to go away? All I think about is these poor kids. They have been cooped up all winter long inside. Every time we got a storm it seemed like it snow more than a foot each time. This make it very difficult for the kids to even enjoy playing in the snow, Especially the younger children. I, myself have two little girls, 1 is 5 and the other just turned 3 last month. My 5 year old attends kindergarten and although they try to get the kids outside as much as possible recess was held inside more than out.

For Christmas, my 5 year old got a pair of ice skates, the beginning of the year we took her out what it seemed like every day after school as we live very close to a lake. Then one weekend we got about 3 feet of snow over 2 days. That makes it very tough to go back out onto the ice because no one likes to shovel, especially me. I am just not built for that kind of task, a few inches is easy to clear but anything more than 8 is very daunting. I guess she will have to pick it back up next year.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that spring is here! (Trust me, it really is) that means cookouts, campfires, and vacations. This time of year is very exciting for someone like me, and all of us in the lawn care business. It give us a chance to beautify the outside! Whether it be fertilizing the grass, planting flowers or growing our vegetable gardens.  My favorite time of the year and we look forward to see all our customers very soon!

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
By Mark Kelbacher, Central Regional Manger

Everyone knows or has seen a Dandelion right ? Sure we have, we usually see this weed sometime late April into May, it has the yellow flower. After the Dandelion (Lion's tooth) matures it produces a seed head (Puff ball). These seedlings are often blown into lawns from large fields, pastures and even from your neighbor's lawn. This perennial weed often grows best in full sun areas, but can survive in shaded areas as well.

So the question is often asked. "If I have a lawn service, why do I see these weeds?" Like many weeds, the best time to control them is when the weeds are actively growing. The Spring and Fall are the best times to control these weeds. We start the season off with a spring treatment that includes a fertilizer, crabgrass preventer and broadleaf weed control. Any Dandelions actively growing at the time of treatment will be controlled, but many won't germinate until soil temperatures warm up.

THERE IS NO PREVENTATIVE CONTROL FOR DANDELIONS. We can only get rid of them after they are actively growing. There are many factors to can come into play when trying to control weeds in a lawn. This is why we offer FREE service calls for our full service customers. Just let us know anytime weeds pop up between treatments and we will come back out and treat them. You can rest assured that with each and every application we will be targeting these weeds and all other weeds on your lawn.

Successful weed control is a team effort. Although there is no way guarantee 100%control of weeds and crabgrass, there are some things you can do to help minimize germination. Follow the recommendations from your Lawn Specialist as it relates to mowing, watering and pH management. A thick healthy lawn is a good way to prevent these ugly weeds from germinating as well, so consider aeration and overseeding in the fall to help with this process.

Drive safe by avoiding distractions

By Ron Connor, Fleet & Safety Manager

How often do you send text messages to your friends and family every day? If you're like us, we're guessing it's a lot. As smartphones have become prominent, so too has the act of messaging others instead of phoning them to communicate. We rely more than ever on handheld technology to keep in touch with those close to us - despite the fact that we're behind the wheel. Talking on the phone while driving may be dangerous, but texting while driving is perhaps the most hazardous action that is prevalent in society today.
