At this time of year, you can't open your inbox without seeing a re-cap or prediction based blog post. If you haven't already seen them, I have shared some of my favorites on my  Facebook timeline

Yes, I agree that mobile will get bigger as will big data. I also LOVE the new user interface of the new MySpace (check it out here and definitely connect with me if you are a member!) But what really tops my wish list for 2013 is my hope that we don't rush to 'standardize' social media.

One of the exciting things about these past few years has been the arrival of all these new, sometimes quirky, sometimes downright confusing, social media communities and platforms. Yes, it can be frustrating - for a while there, it started to feel like a new one was introduced almost every week! Just keeping up with what they did and how they might be able to help you, felt like a full time job. I totally understand that in our desire to identify and categorize, we embrace standardization. Standardization facilitates efficiency. I am all for saving time. But what I am discouraged by is that in our rush to standardize, I worry that we may be stifling creativity. When every platform, by default, seems to institute the vertical 'timeline' format, I have to wonder, is that really the BEST solution or just the one that is slightly familiar so people will more easily accept it? And while large cover photos do visually enhance profiles, it was almost comical how quickly LinkedIn and Twitter adopted them once they became the Facebook standard.

Stay Up to Date!

As I have mentioned in the past, only 15 - 17% of status updates made by Facebook Business Pages are pushed to Fan's newsfeeds. If you really want to see everything a business is sharing, you really need to sign up for 'Notifications'.

Notifications ensure that every post is pushed to your newsfeed. As long as the pages are posting content of value, this should be a plus!  I post valuable news, suggestions, tutorials and classes on a daily basis. If you are not already signed up for notifications from my page, please do so you don't miss any important updates (like last minute invites to free events and lots of advice!)  Here are the steps - it will take 30 seconds (or less!)

  1. Go to the Page
  2. Hover over the "Liked" button (if you have already liked the page - if you have not already "Liked" the page, do so now by clicking the "Like" button)
  3. A small drop down menu will appear Click "Get Notifications"
Notifications on FB
When you choose to get notifications, you'll get a notification each time that Page posts something you're eligible to see. You can turn off these notifications by unchecking Get Notifications.

The New LinkedIn Profiles are live!

New LinkedIn Profile

New LinkedIn profile format is live - if you do not yet have it, I am sure that everyone will eventually be migrated. You can visit my profile at www.linkedin.com/in/lisamariedias or click on the image above. Here are my thoughts on the new layout - please email or comment on my Facebook Page to let me know what YOU think!

Pros:
Click on someone who endorsed you and you have a quick option to 'message' them (great for thank you's!) and there are now head shots next to the recommendations and who viewed your profile

Cons:

In the first few days after the transition I lost my drop box, Portfolio and SlideShare apps (though they did warn me that this would be the case). Slideshare seems to be back and my Link to my portfolio on my website DOES work but if you used any of these apps, please be sure to see if they are still working as intended. Remember that you can link to an outside location for a portfolio if necessary!

I find the new icons at the head of every section to be kind of amateurish - not at all in keeping with the sleek new grey interface! I understand the appeal of icons/graphics vs words in an international, multi-lingual platform but they could have done a better job there.

New, but not sure if it is a pro or con, is the graphic in the sidebar which tells you how many people you know by industry type/ school/ location (there is a drop down to cycle thru these options.)  It feels like they are just showing off their 'big data' but they are sharing it with us so check it out, it may prove useful.

And be sure to join us on the LinkedIn Webinar to learn more about optimizing your new profile! See above more more about the session and click here to register
