Then followed that beautiful season...Summer. Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.

During Spring we revel in the massive quantities of young plants that pass through the nursery on their way to gardens across central Alabama. But in June, we get to marvel at the wildly vigorous and colorful flowers and foliage that arrive from our local and regional growers. As we approach the height of our long growing season, June is one of the best months to enjoy the abundance of your garden. We will receive regular shipments of fresh plants this month, so there will be plenty to choose from if you need to add to your garden, or create a new one!

Succulents
are the go-to plant for summer and are so much fun to create with. With their highly varied colors and forms there's nearly no end to the number of ways you can use them, and they can be grown in just about anything that can hold a bit of soil (always be careful not to over-water succulents, especially if the container does not drain). Succulents are one of the few plants that can thrive in spite of neglect, requiring minimal maintenance- a thorough watering once or twice a week is usually sufficient.
|
If you're planning an outdoor party this summer, why not create a centerpiece or place markers with succulents? We've just received a shipment of beautiful stones
glass pebbles and sea glass, in a variety of fresh colors. Finish off your succulent creation with a layer of stones in a complementary color.

Blue Bird of (Watering) Happiness
We love these glass watering globes that are lovely among plants and offer the added bonus of keeping wilt-prone containers watered (especially handy when you go out of town for the weekend). Fill globe with water and insert into pot. Water seeps out slowly into the surrounding soil, and directly to the roots of your container plants!

We've all heard the phrase good things come in small packages, and we'd have to agree when it comes to these two dwarf plants:
'Flutterby Petite Blue Heaven' butterfly bush stays compact at 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, and bursts with blooms all summer. Plant in 3 to 4 hours of sun, or more, per day. Can be planted in a large pot or in the ground. Needless to say, the butterflies LOVE these!
|
For year-round interest, including colorful foliage, blooms and berries, you'll want to find a spot in your landscape for at least one 'Rosa's Blush' blueberry bush (Vaccinium darrowii). Growing only 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, this evergreen shrub produces white blooms in spring that are followed by small, dark purple berries. Foliage flushes with shades of purple when newly emerged and in winter. This plant is native to the southeastern US, so performs well in our climate. Best in part to full sun.

Verdant Fronds
Celebrate and add-to the green hues that burst at the seems of the Alabama landscape in June: tuck ferns around your porch or patio, hang them near doorways, or place them in any bare area of the garden. All of these do well in shade, filtered or some sun (2-3 hours), but if you've got a sunnier spot try Kimberly queen or asparagus ferns. All ferns appreciate regular watering, which helps them stay their greenest & healthiest.
