'Tis the Season!
Over the past few days the greenhouse has been transformed and is now filled with many new sights: amaryllis, cyclamen, Christmas cactus, hydrangeas and paperwhites are blooming among the poinsettias. Tucked throughout are festive items to inspire holiday spirit, and gifts for the gardeners on your list. One of our favorites this year are these hand-crafted star ornaments made of delicately tinted glass with beveled edges- a beautiful gift that will last for many years.

Flowers of the Season
Poinsettias have been enjoyed during the Christmas season for several generations here in America. We have a plentiful supply of the classic red and creamy-white varieties, but if you're in the mood for a change this year we also have a selection of newer varieties, which boast a wide range of eye-catching color combinations and patterns. Poinsettias are easy to care for, and if treated properly tend to last for at least a month or two. Follow these tips to keep your poinsettia healthy: Don't over water. Thoroughly saturate the soil when watering and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Make sure plants don't sit in standing water. Avoid placing poinsettias in cold, drafty areas- they won't tolerate temps below 50 degrees. Bright, indirect light is ideal, although poinsettias can be used in darker areas for a few weeks.

The brilliant apple-green foliage of lemon cypress brings cheerful color to the garden on even the grayest winter day. While best grown outdoors in a sunny spot, they can be brought in and used to decorate for parties during the holiday season, and then taken back outdside. Lemon cypress are slow-growing and do very well in containers. Provide moist, well-drained soil. Lemon cypress are not drought tolerant- tips will brown if they are under-watered. Next summer your lemon cypress will need to be moved to a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Plant pansies or violas with lemon cypress for an extra showy winter display.
|
The limited selection of flowering plants for the winter months can be a bit discouraging to some (pansies, violas & cyclamen are the only cold-hardy blooms, and cyclamen need protection from temps below 25 degrees). However, with the landscape subdued to greens, browns and grays, some foliage stands out nearly as much as flowers do in the spring. Here a richly-colored coral bell is mixed with silvery dusty miller and white-tipped ivy. This combination would grow in shade or sun during winter. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of colorful foliage in the winter garden.
