Collier's Garden Scoop
November 2015
Autumn is here;
Skies are gray, but hearts are mellow,
Leaves are crimson, brown and yellow

William Stanley Braithwaite
November has arrived, and although unusually warm & unpleasantly damp, we're enjoying the progression of fall and anticipating the holiday season, just around the corner. New pots and garden decor arrived during October, and we still have a great selection of pansies & violas, plus many other cool-season plants, which means there are plenty of possibilities for playing in your garden this month!

November Hours
Monday - Saturday

Sunday 1 to 5
We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day
We are expecting freshly cut garland & wreaths as well as poinsettias to arrive during the week of Thanksgiving!

Fresh off the Truck
Blooms for Indoors
Beat the rainy day blues by bringing home cheerful flowers to enjoy indoors. Fragrant freesia, gardenias and ornamental oregano, or vividly-colored calla lilies, hydrangeas and zygo cactus will all last for several weeks inside and some can be planted as perennials in the garden later. Any one would be a lovely gift, and these hothouse beauties can be added to arrangements with foliage accents.

Locally Made
We love these petite succulent planters- handmade from wine corks, they are magnetized-
a tiny garden for your fridge!
We also have larger succulent planters that are great to give as a gift or add interest to a bright
ly lit counter or side table.
Bulbs are in stock! Plant in the ground after Thanksgiving or begin 'forcing' for the holidays now. Paperwhites take 4 to 6 weeks to bloom, amaryllis take a little longer at 6 to 8.

It's not too late to plant your cool-season garden!
Warm weather extending into November means more time for fall annuals to put on size and become established, which means hardier plants and more blooms this winter! We still have an excellent variety of colors in pansies and violas, and many winter-hardy options to plant with them. Don't forget about trailing pansies for containers and hanging baskets (pictured here).
Violas may be little, but they are mighty performers in the cool-season garden.
Cooler temps mean deeper colors on the leaves of ornamental cabbage and kale.
Dianthus (and snaps as well) can be planted now for blooms this fall and again next spring.

Native Worth Noting
Heuchera
This North American native is also known as alumroot or coral bells. Evergreen leaves in a wide range of colors means heuchera can be used in winter containers, contrasting with pansies and violas. During winter, heuchera will tolerate full sun but they must have afternoon shade in summer. Airy panicles of white or pink blooms nod above the mound of leaves in spring. Heuchera will tolerate damp, but not soggy soil. To give you an idea of the diversity of leaf colors and patterns, here are the varieties that are in-store now:
'Amethyst Myst'
'Apple Crisp'
'Brass Lantern'
'Georgia Peach'
'Gold Zebra'
'Pistache'
'Snow Angel'
'Southern Comfort'
'Sugar Plum'

November is the perfect time to plant groundcovers (as well as trees and shrubs) and we have a fun selection of "toe ticklers" in stock right now. These are ground-hugging creepers that can take some foot traffic, and include interesting options for rock gardens and fairy gardens as well. Also in stock are several groundcovers for covering larger spaces in the garden, such as Asiatic jasmine for sunny spots and mondo grass or pachysandra for shadier areas.
Around the Nursery this November...
Autumn ferns and other evergreen ferns such as tassle and holly
Pyramidal American boxwood- perfect size for containers
A great selection of camellias, pictured here 'Cotton Candy'
C. sasanqua

Carolina jessamine covered in golden yellow blooms
A large variety of conifers, pictured here, 'Sudsworth' arborvitae
Adorable dwarf conifers, ideal for containers and rock gardens
'Limelight' hydrangeas, still blooming heavily and it's the perfect time to plant these sun-lovers
'Mission' olive trees, which tolerate temps into the low 20s- grow in a protected spot in a large pot or in the ground
'Chef's Choice' rosemary, prized for its high oil content, spicy flavor and compact growth habit (12-18" tall & wide!)

New Decor for the Garden
We recently received several shipments of new items for the garden, including fountains, statuary and
containers of all sizes, in new styles and colors!

We've noticed in the last day or two that our resident ginkgo tree's leaves have become tinged with yellow, a sure sign that an explosion of golden color is about to appear!
These warm fall days are being enjoyed immensely by the local honey bees- they are out in force and buzzing around many of the blooms at the nursery (seen here on poppies).
The average first frost is November 8th

It's not too late to apply pre-emergent to zoysia and bermuda lawns. Apply during November to prevent cool-season weeds from germinating. We recommend Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper with Dimension.
