Collier's Garden Scoop
September 2015
In all things of nature there is something marvelous.
'Wildfire' Echeveria
September is always an exciting month at the nursery. Here we are at the edge of summer, both our gardens and ourselves weary of the heat, but we look forward  to the prospect of cooler days just around the bend, and seeing again the many plants that
   only appear in Autumn.

 At the nursery this month...
During September we will welcome the arrival of many fall favorites, and a few are already in stock! We've received the first mums of the season (many more to come!) along with crotons, asters and marigolds. Petunias and cosmos arrive this week, as well as fresh herbs and fall veggies- plenty of options to refresh your garden if it has grown listless. Read on to discover what else can be found at the nursery right now.
An unusual find, perfect for the collector: We are in love with these white-blooming anthuriums!
Large dracaena and fiddle leaf figs are easy but dramatic additions to covered porches or bright rooms.
Sun-loving hydrangea varieties are budded and blooming! Pictured here, 'Pinky Winky' and 'Little Lime'
In anticipation of fall, the absolute best time to plant, we have already received a shipment of beautiful shrubs and conifers!
Hints of fall are creeping into the greenhouse, evident here in the riotous leaves of crotons, tempered by the subtle greens of ferns and ivy.

Do Your Containers Need Some Refreshing?
Beat the late summer garden blues with a freshly planted container garden! We've combined sedum, plectranthus, vinca and pentas in this pot- a monochromatic mix that shines in spite of the heat. Stop by the nursery this month and let us help you create your own cool combo!
Fall for the Colors of Autumn
Isn't it curious how the orange, yellow and purple of autumn leaves find their way into the flowers of fall as well? Here are some of our top picks for turning your garden into a fall festival of color.
Mums simply can't be beat for instant color in containers.
Crotons are very easy to care for and look spectacular tucked in to fall plantings.
Kick things up a notch in the fall garden with the vivid blooms of marigolds.
Use asters for reliable blooms each autumn- they're perennial!
The lovely shades of coral bell leaves are perfect for accenting fall flowers.
Salvias continue to bloom well into fall, the last hoorah of the summer garden.

Fun Find: Yuccas
Several varieties of this rugged native plant are in-store now! While they sport some wickedly sharp, blade-like leaves, what yuccas lack in softness they make up for with extreme tolerance of our hot southern summers. Mass several of these low-maintenance, evergreen perennials, or use one in the garden or a large container as a specimen or focal point.
