I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Fresh greenery
including garland, wreaths & swags,
has arrived just in time for the holiday season! Buy garland by the foot or roll
to adorn railings, posts and doorframes. Mantelpiece arrangements come pre-made for easy but elegant decorating. Wreaths of fraser & noble fir, cedar, juniper & boxwood, are available in a variety of sizes. Christmas crosses (pictured here) have become a favorite with many of our customers. Enjoy the fragrance of freshly cut greenery in and around your home this Christmas season!

Poinsettias endure as the favorite blooms of Christmas. While the outdoor landscape fades to a more subtle presence, poinsettias provide a spectacular display of color that brightens & warms our homes during the (usually) cold days of December. They are long-lasting and require minimal care. Follow these basics & easily enjoy poinsettias around the house this season:
--Place your poinsettia in a cool, bright area. Temps between 60 and 65 degrees are ideal. Avoid placing the plant in an extremely sunny window.
--Poinsettias like to be kept moist (not too wet or dry). Check daily & add water when the soil surface feels dry. Empty excess water from trays & foil wrappings (don't let the plant sit in water).
--Avoid exposing poinsettias to warm or cold air drafts by not placing them near air vents or cold doorways.
--Don't allow the plant to touch a cold windowpane.
|
Deck the Halls with Blooms
In addition to poinsettias, we have several other flowering plants that can be used to decorate indoors for the holidays, or be given as gifts to family & friends who would enjoy them.
|
|
|
Christmas Cactus
Colorful & cheerful, as well as low-maintenance. Could be paired with a finely-textured fern to soften the look of their bold, leathery leaves. Allow soil to dry before watering.
|
Cyclamen
Long-blooming & durable,
these are also relatively cold-hardy (to mid-20s). Can be used indoors in bright light or outdoors in shade
or partial sun.
|
|
|
|
Hothouse Hydrangeas
These 'forced' hydrangeas bloom for 3 to 5 weeks & can then be planted outdoors, in partial sun, where they will grow 3-4 feet tall & wide. Pictured here: 'Shooting Star' Hydrangea macrophylla
|
Paperwhites
While not everyone's 'cup of tea,'
for those who enjoy the strong, sweet fragrance of paperwhites they are a joy to have around during the holidays. Keep in a cool area away from very sunny windows to prolong their lifespan.

Interesting Finds for the Gardeners on Your List
|
|
|
|
Bay Laurel
Long a symbol of greatness & nobility, bay laurel can bring its history, fragrance and flavor to the garden. A slow-growing tree that can be grown in a large container. Hardy to low 20s. Leaves can be harvested, dried easily on the stem & stored for up to a year.
|
Arbequina Olive
This variety of olive tree is more tolerant of heat & humidity, as well as frost, than others. Another slow-growing evergreen that can be grown in a large container. Black fruit ripens in late November; bears fruit in the first or second year after planting!
|
Rosa's Blush
Dwarf Blueberry
This compact-growng blueberry is native to the southeastern United States! Evergreen foliage turns lovely shades of purple-red in winter.
Pink blooms in spring are followed by blue fruit in early to
mid-summer.

For anyone on your list
who has a green-thumb,
consider a fun gift for their garden:
a charming statue, lovely container or a gift card they can look forward to using next spring!

Are your flowerbeds and containers ready for the arrival of holiday guests?
If not, you still have time to plant pansies & violas!
The warm start to December that we are experiencing is actually great news for anyone who is late planting their beds and containers for winter. Temps in the 60s & 70s will allow the plants to grow a little more before the really cold days of January & February. We still have a good selection, so come by & get what you need to finish up planting before holiday gatherings.
|
Red Star Cypress
We love this conifer as a vertical accent in winter containers!
The deep, winter color of red & purple also adds interest & contrast to pansy and viola blooms. Slow-growing, columnar habit. Can be used in a container for several seasons, then transplanted to the landscape. Reaches 10 to 12 feet tall & 3 to 4 wide in the ground.
