Collier's Garden Scoop
November 2014
The fires burn and the kettles sing,
and the earth sinks to rest until next spring
~Elizabeth Coatsworth
 Here we find ourselves again,
at the time of year when the outdoors become more subdued, and we draw in to the warmth
of our homes, and the company
of family & friends.
While the landscape may be going to sleep for the winter,
it's well worth it to plant flowerbeds & containers for the cold season. The cheerful color of pansies & violas counteracts
dull winter days, especially when planted where they can be seen from windows in your home, or near doorways that you pass through each day.
During November we will have an excellent selection of plants for indoors & out, perfect for warming your gardening soul!

Container Garden Ideas

for Late Fall & Winter

Pansies & violas are the only reliable blooms for winter, but there are many evergreen foliage options to use as companion plants.

Dwarf English Boxwoods look especially nice in small or short containers. These are deer resistant!
Dwarf Alberta Spruce are a great choice for taller containers, and can be decorated for Christmas!
Rosemary offers fragrant foliage for winter plantings, and flavor for holiday dishes. Upright & trailing varieties available.
Ornamental grasses such as sweet flag (pictured here) and sedge can be used for texture in small containers.
Lemon Cypress has become a favorite of our customers for its vivid green foliage that smells of lemons!
Ornamental kale can be used as a height accent in containers, and looks great in groupings or mass in flowerbeds.
Coral bells (Heuchera species) come in an array of colorful leaves- bright greens, dark purples and several shades of bronze. These are perennials that prefer mostly shade during summer. In winter they will tolerate full sun and can be used to accent pansy & viola colors. Coral bells are pictured here with wispy sweet flag (Acorus species). Both of these evergreen perennials tend to be left alone by deer. Use these in winter plantings & transfer to a shady area next spring. The same can be done with the following evergreen ferns:
Autumn fern
Holly fern
Tassle fern
Soft and Shimmery Silvers for Winter
Dusty Miller can be used this winter and will usually continue to grow into next summer as well.
The velvety foliage of lamb's ears are nearly irresistible. Use as a foliage accent for winter plantings; these are perennial.
Spring bulbs have arrived
Plant after Thanksgiving for blooms next spring. Tuck among pansies & violas (in containers or flowerbeds) for a real show when they emerge in a few months, or force indoors for the holidays (allow 4-6 weeks for flowers to appear). Our bulbs are pre-chilled; plant each bulb twice as deep as the bulb is tall. Tulips, hyacinths, allium, daffodils and paperwhites are in stock!
Abundant early spring blooms
are a snap...
If you plant snapdragons now, that is! Planting snaps in the fall allows them to get established during winter, resulting in much more vigorous growth & blooms next spring. We still have a great selection of tall, short & trailing varieties and it's not too late to plant.
Snaps thrive in full or partial sun, and can be used in flowerbeds or containers. They are also known to be deer resistant!

Fall is for Planting!

November is still an excellent time to tackle landscaping projects.

It is the ideal time of year to plant trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines and perennials. Planting now allows the plants' root systems to become established before growth begins to emerge next spring.

Pink Muhly Grass
Native to the southeast, muhly grass is perfectly suited for our hot, dry summer weather. Exquisite, fluffy pink plumes appear in late summer & fall. An especially nice planting of these can be seen at Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham. Grows 3-4 feet tall & 2-3 feet wide. Thrives in sun or partial sun. In stock now & it's a great time to plant these!
Camellia sasanqua 'Mine No Yuki'
Camellia season has begun
How lucky we are to live in an area where winter temps are generally mild enough to allow such spectacular blooms as these to emerge in spite of the chill. We have our  best selection of camellias during November, December, January & February. Camellias can also be used in large containers with pansies for an extra-colorful winter pairing. It's the perfect time to add one or more of these southern favorites to your garden. They also make an excellent gift for the gardener on your holiday list!
Many of our customers struggle with deer invading & destroying their gardens, a problem that becomes especially frustrating in winter, when they are searching harder for food supplies. We've heard success stories involving spreading human or dog hair around flowerbeds, or planting evergreen herbs in & among beds & containers. Several customers have also had luck using Shake-Away,
a powder that you sprinkle around the perimeter of garden areas to create the illusion of a predator being nearby.
It's not too late to apply pre-emergent to zoysia & Bermuda lawns for cool-season weed prevention. We recommend Hi-Yield Weed & Grass Stopper with Dimension.

To control weeds that pop up in centipede or

St. Augustine lawns during winter, spot spray with Hi-Yield Atrazine.

To control weeds that emerge in zoysia or Bermuda lawns during winter, spot spray with fertilome Weed
