Collier's Garden Scoop
June 2014
Summer afternoon...summer afternoon;
to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.
-Henry James
This June begins with a landscape filled with lush green growth, thanks to the ample rains of April and May. Temperatures have begun to warm up, but cloudy skies and cooler evenings allow for plenty of time to get out and garden comfortably. We will continue to receive several shipments of fresh plants each week, ensuring that the nursery remains stocked with interesting and beautiful choices for your garden. We look forward to seeing you this month!

Garden 'Standouts'
While our selection during June will not be as abundant as it was in April, the nursery is still nearly full of colorful & interesting choices for your garden. We work hard in the summer to keep our plants fresh & healthy for customers who are starting garden projects from scratch, filling in or sprucing up for a party. So, we will always have beautiful options, no matter how hot it gets!
Here are a few 'standouts' currently in stock:
 Big-Leaf Begonias
Varieties such as Dragonwing, Whopper & Big, are heat & drought tolerant with showy foliage &
tons of blooms.

Crossandra

Unusual bright orange blooms are an eye-catching addition to the garden. Glossy foliage also adds interest.

Eucalyptus

Fast-growing & shrubby, with wonderfully fragrant silver-blue foliage that's great for cutting. Tender perennial.

 Fountain Grass
These showy grasses are sun, heat & drought tolerant and sport feathery plumes late summer into fall. Pictured here: Fireworks.

Plumbago

Blue blooms are sometimes hard to find, but plumbago provides them in abundance throughout summer. Shrubby habit to

2-3 feet.

Shrimp Plant

Extremely unusual blooms & big leaves lend a tropical look.

Prefers shade with bright, indirect light or filtered sun (shield from hot sun).

Hydrangea Season
You know summer has arrived when the hydrangeas begin blooming, and if you haven't added one to your landscape, you are missing out! Follow these links to become better acquainted with hydrangeas and how to care for them:

Garden Art
Unique, hand-made boxes filled with succulents, including sedum and hen & chicks, are the perfect choice for a patio or porch table that bakes in the sun, and make great low-maintenance gifts that can be enjoyed without the hassle of frequent watering.

For the Birds & Butterflies
The summer air brings on it the wings of butterflies and hummingbirds, and we have already spotted both at the nursery.
If you enjoy having these beautiful creatures in your garden, plant one or more of these nectar sources to encourage their presence.
 Lantana
Provides the tubular blooms that hummingbirds love to feed from and the "landing pad" that butterflies prefer because it allows them to sit still and rest while feeding. Lantana is notorious for sun & heat tolerance.

Milkweed

Clusters of tiny orchid-like blooms make this one a head-turner, especially for butterflies that delight in finding it. We have this annual variety in yellow and an orange-red bicolor.

Pentas

Another favorite of both hummingbirds and butterflies, these are a must-have to better attract both. Pentas are sun-loving, and will bloom best & longest if deadheaded twice a month (it's worth it!).

Ragin' Cajun

A Ruellia species with non-stop fiery red blooms throughout summer. Foliage stays low & mounding, while blooms sit atop tall, delicate stems. Another must-have for attracting hummingbirds.
