And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees...
I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with
the summer.

summer perennials
Our Top Picks for July
These annuals will stand up to the heat of summer and are some of our favorites for containers and flowerbeds right now.
caladium
fanflower
lantana
Caladiums sport showy leaves that really pop in shade, and check out new sun-tolerant varieties for sunnier spots.
Fanflower trails in part to full sun
and attracts hummingbirds. White, pink or lavender-blue blooms available.
A must-have for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds, lantana is sun, heat and drought tolerant.

mandevilla
pentas
plectranthus
Mandevilla vines grow quickly and bloom profusely all summer. Grow on a trellis, railing or arbor in part to full sun.

Pentas are also a great choice for attracting both butterflies and hummingbirds. Grow in part to full sun.

Plectranthus (also known as Cuban oregano) offers fragrant foliage that accents blooms well, and stands up to heat and drought.
purslane
succulents
vinca
Purslane rank at the top of our list for sun, heat and drought tolerance. Plus, their bright blooms turn heads all summer!

Succulents dazzle with their unusual colors and forms. Used individually or grouped together, these make any container shine.
Vinca, also referred to as periwinkle, thrives in sunny, dry spots and rewards those who plant it with non-stop blooms until frost.
perennials We still have an interesting & varied selection of perennials!
The balloon flowers, coneflowers, coreopsis, rudbeckias, salvias and veronicas are in bloom now, among others. Perennials tend to bloom in cycles of 4 to 6 weeks (with a 2-3 week break in between). Deadhead and fertilize after each bloom period and most will re-bloom.

perennial grasses
coneflowers
hostas
We have our best selection of perennial grasses right now. Grasses are heat & drought tolerant and a great way to add texture & movement to the garden.

Coneflower blooms seem to holler, "It's summer in Alabama!" These are durable native plants that make excellent cut-flowers. Check out new & unusual colors this year.
We also still have a great selection of hostas. These offer low-maintenance, colorful foliage and showy blooms for the summer shade garden.
Limelight Hydrangea Limelight Hydrangeas
are budded & blooming!
These are sun-tolerant hydrangeas that bloom mid to late summer.
Spectacularly large blooms open lime green, then fade to white and pink.
These very long-lasting blooms are also great for cutting. Plant in full to partial sun, each plant will grow
4 to 6 feet tall and wide.

Relief for Water Woes
Here are some tips to help your plants endure and thrive
in the summer heat...
  • It's best to water early in the morning or in the evening whenever possible. Water doesn't evaporate as quickly during these cooler times of the day, which means your plants can soak up a little extra moisture.
  • Over-watering can cause symptoms similar to under-watering, such as wilted, yellow leaves. Check the soil before you water- if the top few inches feel damp, then skip watering until it dries out.
  • It's best to water thoroughly less often than sparingly every day. Drench your plantings and then allow the soil to dry to the touch before watering again.
moisture meter
mulch
soil moist
Moisture meters take the guess-work out of watering! Insert into the soil and the meter lets you know how much moisture is present. This is a great way to avoid over-watering.
Add a layer of mulch or moss to your flowerbeds and container plantings to help retain moisture and insulate plant roots from the heat- it's easy & inexpensive!
When added to potting soil, Soil Moist absorbs extra moisture so you don't have to water quite as often. Soak the crystals first, then mix into
the soil.
If you have a zoysia or bermuda lawn, we recommend
applying fertilome Lawnfood Plus Iron in early July.
You can view our lawn care schedules here.
Bayer lawn weed killer
atrazine
bayer fungus control
For visible weeds in zoysia & bermuda we recommend spot-spraying with Bayer Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer.
For visible weeds in centipede &
St. Augustine we recommend spot-spraying with
Hi-Yield Atrazine.
For fungal problems in your lawn, which can be exasperated by rainy weather, we recommend applying granular Bayer Fungus Control for Lawns.
