Cigarette Safety & Proper Disposal

A Serious Issue!

Firefighters respond to thousands of fires each year. A large number of those fires are caused by improperly discarded cigarettes. Cigarettes are discarded unsafely in a number of ways. They are often thrown from car windows, which can cause bark dust and grass fires. They are discarded into combustible containers around the home. Such containers can smolder for hours before free burning occurs. They are often left smoldering on combustible bedding or furniture after smokers fall asleep or forget about them.

Every year in the United States, almost 1,000 smokers and non-smokers are killed in home fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials.
The Fire Prevention Partners of Clark County are working to help prevent home fire deaths and injuries caused by smoking materials. Fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials are preventable.

You can make a difference!

Section 308.2.1 of the International Fire Code states: No person shall throw or place a lighted match, cigar, cigarette, matches, or other flaming substance... where it can cause an unwanted fire.

It is the apartment manager's responsibility to enforce this code section. Does your lease agreement or property have rules regarding this? If so, do you enforce it?

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Ask residents to soak cigarette butts in water before throwing into trashcans or dumpsters.
  • Provide smokers with waste receptacles for cigarette disposal.

  • Draw a floor plan or a map of your home. Show all doors and windows.
  • Mark two ways out of each room.
  • Mark all of the smoke alarms. Smoke alarms should be in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
  • Pick a family meeting place outside where everyone can meet.
  • Remember, practice your plan at least twice a year!
