See you the Maryhill
If you are in the neighborhood, Saturday, April 16, Maryhill, WA., bring your spring bonnet to
Spring Fling, Maryhill Museums's annual luncheon fundraiser. This gem is not to be believed, a mansion in the country that is a first class home to miniature fashion treasures by the best designers -- home of the famous Theatre de la Mode and the Vionnet
Identique collection. I'll happily be paying
more homage to Vionnet in my talk with samples and hope to meet other lifelong students of her work.

Just in case you're thinking Vionnet is really history by now (she designed in the 1920's & 30's), People Magazine's March Trend Report did a number on her slip dresses -- bias cut and as fabulous as ever -- all copied!

[Secret: here's the link to download LACMA's Callot Soeurs Lounging Pajama pattern. Vionnet worked for them and later came out with a version of same, found in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion.]
Men, Men, Men
Usually fascinating and always hard to figure but there's some action in the fashion department which can help!  LACMA is doing a show, Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715 - 2015, April 10 - August 21, Los Angeles.
PLUS, here are the patterns to download, yea!! What's there not to love?

And then for the 'sartorially challenged' -- never couldunderstand how so many smart guys could be so clueless about mere threads but whatever -- BottomLine ran a great guide, a list of sure thing men's trends. Believe it, no guessing. For instance, what glasses, what accessories and pink & purple shirts -- most important, they say why.

Alas, turns out it's all about money, San Francisco is now "warming to fashion" -- proof that climate change is a sociological force too. It's that extra tech money heating up the City and gifting our eyes, finally.

Can't leave men yet -- check Uniformity, the latest show at F.I.T., May 20 - November 19. All about how & why uniforms. We know they can do great things for some guys -- not to mention to some guys! Remember, T-shirts and jeans are a uniform -- the thinking is embedded there too. I think we spent a week on that topic in Dress and Society.
Heroes
Now for some heroes in the fashion world -- I mean real ones.  First, Bill Cunningham, the best chronicler of fashion out there, hems down. And this time I caught him actually declaring someone perfect for the season -- usually, he's a fly on the wall, not a judge. Here she is and he's right -- the look nails the time.
In case you ever doubted why you should dress everyday (like, looking good makes you feel good), here is guileless proof. It's still internally important even when you can't afford it. THE LITTLE DRESS Vicki Vasilopoulos' new film about 99-year old Iowa native Lillian Weber and her remarkable goal:  to sew 1,000 dresses for needy little girls in Africa before she turned 100 years old. Vicki's doing an Indiegogo project to fund it -- send money. A BIG Thank you to Lillian, for making so many little girls feel good about themselves
New Patterns, Fabrics, Book
Cosplay by McCall's Pattern Collection. What a strange collection of really terrific patterns, all costumes, but one's mind jumps to how-else-to-wear. Included are some ethnic pieces, shoes, corsets, wings, even an umbrella cover and I can tell you that walking around everyday in a costume is a reality for lots of folks. Naturally, why not do them in Cosplay Fabrics, due this spring in JoAnn's all over. And while at McCall's check their books, especially Tim Long's book, Charles James, Designer in Detail. He did that great show on James in Chicago, know's his stuff.
A 3-D Printed Dress
Think about those words and imagine where we are headed!  Dresses that are printed out and you can step into them and be off -- they move, fit perfectly and look amazing.  Seeing is believing. Poke around on their site for a serious case of the wants -- like maybe the Kinematic Petals Necklace.

Donegal
This is the real, real thing and it is coming back strong for those who just want to cut through it all. Check the Molloys for fabrics, this video and Studio Donegal for the clothes.

A word on change . . . forcing it never sticks, no matter who insists or coerces, public or private, nor how loudly they do so in this election year.

Real change happens when people are invited into a shared effort. Takes longer but works better and the change is real. Invite people in, thank you.
